Juan Ayuso wins the 2025 Tirreno-Adriatico

Road 16/03/25 16:00 Migue A.

Juan Ayuso adds the second stage race to his palmarès, after last year's Itzulia, with a victory in Tirreno-Adriatico forged in the great time trial he performed on the first day and a fantastic performance in the queen stage of the race. Special mention to Filippo Ganna who warns ahead of Milan-San Remo after climbing to the third step of the podium.

Versatility in all terrains serves Juan Ayuso to win the Tirreno-Adriatico trident

Juan Ayuso lived up to expectations and won the coveted trident, one of the most attractive trophies in cycling, which recognizes the winner of the Tirreno-Adriatico, the race of the two seas that once again made us enjoy a week of exciting cycling despite the harsh weather conditions that the cyclists had to endure.

The race started, as has become tradition in recent years, with an individual time trial in the streets of Lido di Camaiore in which Filippo Ganna turned around the result of last year, when Juan Ayuso surprisingly won, and managed to win the time trial with great authority, beating the rider from Alicante by no less than 22 seconds in just 11 kilometers.

The general classification was thus very conditioned with most of the peloton more than half a minute behind with a route ahead with only one truly decisive finish in the stage that would be held one day before the conclusion with a finish in Frontignano.

Until that point, we experienced intense stages but none truly decisive. The second stage, as expected, was decided in a sprint with a Jonathan Milan who showed his strength. In the third stage, the ascent to Colfiorito, just 5 kilometers from the finish, failed to break the group and, in the final meters, Andrea Vendrame managed to win ahead of a Tom Pidcock who continues to impress.

INEOS Grenadiers was the protagonist of the 4th stage, after creating echelons in the middle of the stage, in a false flat area on the descent of Valico de La Croceta. A day of intense cold and moments of rain in which the peloton flew. Finally, the intention to eliminate rivals did not come to fruition and in the final part the race regrouped and the Dutchman from Visma-Lease a Bike, Olav Kooij, won in a reduced sprint.

The fifth stage, which was supposed to be one of the decisive ones, was not so much. Despite the broken finish and a climb just 7 kilometers from the finish, the favorites did not move, only a timid attack by Juan Ayuso responded without problem by Tom Pidcock. The vigilance among all of them served for the last survivor of the day's breakaway to reach the finish line and UNO X-Mobility scored another prestigious victory with the Norwegian Fredik Dversnes.

Everything was therefore pending to be decided in the only stage with a mountainous finish. A stage with a single climb that UAE Team Emirates-XRG controlled perfectly with an ascent in which they put their train to work until the offensive move of Juan Ayuso who took Tom Pidcock, Jai Hindley, and Mikel Landa with him. Meanwhile, Filippo Ganna, despite not being a climber, knew how to suffer to minimize the losses.

Juan Ayuso would attack again, sealing the overall victory by also winning the stage. Behind, Antonio Tiberi climbed back up and thanks to his good performance in the time trial, he rose to second place overall and, conceding just 50 seconds to Ayuso, entering alongside climbers like Pello Bilbao or Simon Yates, Filippo Ganna managed to secure the third place on the podium.

Only the final stage in San Benedetto del Tronto remained, a completely flat day that, as it could not be otherwise, was decided in a sprint. A sprint that was once again won by Jonathan Milan, showcasing his power.
