Urtopia bike brand creates a minimalist motor for its ebikes

As every year, the CES fair in Las Vegas brings us some interesting news in the world of ebikes, and this year it was the turn of the bike company specializing in electric models, Urtopia, which presented at this fair its Quarq DM1.2 motor, undoubtedly the smallest and lightest seen in the market so far.

A motor that, despite its limited size, has performance that seems incredibly achievable in that tiny volume, declaring 60 Nm of torque, more than the TQ HPR50 motor that until now boasted of being the lightest and smallest. Speaking of weight, it also outperforms the German brand's motor in this aspect by leaving the scale at 1,180 g. In fact, its size and shape are like a bottom bracket axle with a diameter that is not much different from the eccentric bottom brackets used in tandem bikes or in some BMX and singlespeed bike models to tension the chain.

A motor that seems designed for road bikes where making the ebike practically indistinguishable from a conventional one is a plus when selling bikes, and where more than a motor that provides a lot of torque, a subtle assistance is needed to give us those extra watts that allow us to enjoy ascents without losing the feeling of natural pedaling. Therefore, it is no coincidence that Urtopia presented this Quarq DM1.2 mounted on a spectacular titanium bike manufactured through 3D printing of this material.

But there is not only technology in its motor, Urtopia has also worked on its batteries, achieving an energy density of 300 Wh/kg, which also means weight and size savings of the battery compared to the best batteries currently on the market that have a density of 215 Wh/kg, contributing to making the bike even more discreet.

What Urtopia has not revealed is whether its Quarq DM1.2 motor will be mounted only on its own bikes or if they will market it separately so that other manufacturers can benefit from the qualities of this spectacular motor in their models.
