How much money is Van der Poel earning this cyclocross season?
Mathieu van der Poel has only needed six cyclocross races this season to become one of the main protagonists, but how much money has he earned in those races?
Only two riders have earned more than Van der Poel this season, but with many more days of competition
Van der Poel has won everything he has raced this winter in the mud. And, as the newspaper Het Nieuwsblad points out, four victories in the World Cup mean 5,000 euros per win, plus the 1,400 euros from his victory in Loenhout and the 350 euros earned in Hofstade, which totals 21,750 euros after just six days of competition.
A figure that, compared to the 11,000 euros awarded for winning a stage of the Tour de France or the stratospheric salary that Van der Poel earns, may seem unremarkable. But it should be noted that the Dutchman is using cyclocross as preparation for his road season, selectively choosing the races he enters and winning them all.
Despite his perfect record of victories, Van der Poel is not the cyclist who has earned the most money this winter in cyclocross. That honor goes to Thibau Nys, who has accumulated 25,110 euros, especially boosted by his victory in Dendermonde, also awarded 5,000 euros. However, Nys has already competed for 13 days, more than double that of Van der Poel.

Thibau Nys wins an incredibly exciting World Cup cyclocross race in Dendermonde

The other rider who surpasses the world champion is Michael Vanthourenhout, with 22,255 euros after 21 races. Just 500 euros more than Van der Poel, but having raced three and a half times more.
The other big name in modern cyclocross, Wout van Aert, has still not managed to get his first victory this winter. After five races, his financial balance is 4,850 euros, far from the records of his eternal Dutch rival.
Unless something unexpected happens, Van der Poel plans to compete in at least six more races this season, three of which are World Cup events. If he maintains his perfect record, he could add another 15,000 euros just from those events, which would easily make him the biggest prize earner of the winter.
As of today, only Thibau Nys seems to have a real chance of contesting that economic leadership, always conditioned on Van der Poel continuing to compete with the same authority.
