How much does the wind really hold you back? MoguWind is free and calculates it in real time for Garmin

The wind is one of the factors that most affects a cyclist's performance, but it is also one of the most difficult to interpret during a ride. With that goal in mind, MoguWind was created, a free application for Garmin devices that shows in real-time how the wind affects the ride and, in addition, records all that information for later analysis in Garmin Connect.

MoguWind: the new free app for Garmin that turns wind into another data point for your training

Available through Garmin Connect IQ, this Spanish application has already surpassed 5,000 downloads, is compatible with 21 Garmin devices, is translated into 10 languages, and maintains a very high average rating from users, of 4.7 out of 5.

The wind, explained while you pedal

MoguWind works as a data field that can be added to any training screen of the Garmin bike computer. Instead of just showing the general direction of the wind, it calculates how it exactly affects the cyclist based on their heading using GPS.

Its most striking element is a dynamic arrow that changes orientation and color according to the situation:

  • Green when the wind is pushing from behind
  • Red when it blows head-on
  • Yellow or orange when it comes from the side

Alongside it, numerical data appears about the head or tail wind component (Head/Tail), crosswind (Crosswind), and the cardinal direction along with wind speed and gusts.

Additionally, the user can complete the screen with two configurable fields to visualize common metrics such as speed, power, heart rate, cadence, distance, elevation, or activity time.

Analyze later how the wind influenced

One of the main innovations of version 2.0 is that all wind information is recorded in the FIT file of the activity. This allows users to later consult the data directly from Garmin Connect, without the need for external applications or subscription services.

After finishing the route, the user can access specific graphs about:

  • Wind speed
  • Evolution of head and tail wind
  • Comparison between ground speed and air speed

It also includes a summary with eight specific metrics, including: average wind speed, average and maximum head wind, maximum tail wind, percentage of the route with head, side, or tail wind, or the Wind Balance index, a score that ranges from -100 (entire route with head wind) to +100 (entire route with tail wind). On circular routes, the value should approach zero.

A useful data point for training… and also for riding safely

The developers of MoguWind explain that the goal is not only to provide meteorological information but to help interpret performance during a ride.

Knowing the real component of the wind allows understanding why a certain power produces different speeds depending on the segment of the route, better adjusting the pace in training, or planning strategy on long routes.

It can also provide an extra layer of safety by visually alerting when the crosswind reaches significant intensity, a particularly delicate situation on open roads, bridges, or exposed areas.

Three meteorological sources to keep data available

To obtain wind information, the application uses a system with several data sources.

The main one is Open-Meteo, a free service that updates information every five minutes and does not require API keys. As a backup, it can rely on OpenWeatherMap, while Garmin Weather acts as a base source to ensure that information is always available even when there is no internet connection.

Compatible with numerous Garmin devices

MoguWind can be downloaded for free from the Garmin Connect IQ platform and is available in Spanish, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Bahasa, Japanese, and Chinese.

With a proposal focused exclusively on one of the factors that most affect any bike ride, the application seeks to turn wind into a data point as accessible as power, heart rate, or speed, both during training and in later analysis.
