The Absa Cape Epic is one of the most demanding mountain bike stage races in the world and has hundreds of stories and legends surrounding it. One of them is the so-called "lions" of the race, cyclists who have completed all editions since its creation. John Gale is one of them and in 2025 he will retire the SCOTT Spark RC with which he has competed in the last 11 editions.
John Gale has completed 11 Cape Epics with this 2013 SCOTT Spark RC
John Gale has not only participated in all 20 editions of the Cape Epic, and of course is registered for the 2025 edition, but he has managed to complete 11 of them with the same SCOTT Spark RC.
Gale works as an accountant in Cape Town and is a reference in the world's most important mountain bike race for being one of the very few who have completed each of its editions.
From 2013 to 2024 Gale has done and finished all Cape Epics on this same SCOTT Spark
But this time it's not him who is the protagonist but his bike. SCOTT has asked for the SCOTT Spark RC with which he has competed from 2013 to 2024 to take it to Switzerland and exhibit it in the same museum where such iconic models of the brand reside as those with which Nino Schurter has won world championships, Olympics, or World Cup races.
Since 2013, Gale has relied on his SCOTT Spark RC to tackle all of his Cape Epic rides and although he has upgraded it, upgraded the fork from 100mm to 110mm or swapped his 3x9 drivetrain for a 1x12, he claims it has never given him any major mechanical issues in the race.
With this well-deserved retirement comes a major change in the gear John Gale will ride in 2025. And this year he will be racing on the brand new SCOTT Spark RC World Cup EVO with Flight Attendant electronic suspensions.
In 2025 John Gale will be racing the same SCOTT Spark model ridden by Nino Schurter and Filippo Colombo.
