Garmin has just introduced the new Edge 540 and Edge 840 GPS, two of the brand's most popular and appreciated cycling computers that now arrive from €399 and in versions with solar charging, among other new features. This solar charging is one of the most differentiating features compared to the competitors and promises from 32 to 60 hours of autonomy.

The new GPS Garmin Edge 540 and Edge 840 multiply their autonomy thanks to solar charging

Two new models of cycling computers have just been added to the Garmin catalog, the Edge 540 and Edge 840, and stand out for combining a wide range of performance-based training metrics, including a unique comprehensive training in its class aimed at personal goals, enhanced navigation support thanks to Multiband GNSS or a multitude of online features. All this in a familiar compact and lightweight design that has made them a favorite device of many professional and amateur cyclists, even ahead of the top model, the Garmin Edge 1040.

  • Cycling ability: specific function to identify the cyclist's strengths and weaknesses and take them into account when designing a specific ride or focusing training on the right areas.
  • Specific training plans: whether for indoor or outdoor cycling, riders can view suggested daily workouts and training cues, as well as receive personalized workouts that are tailored according to training load, recovery and the demands of upcoming rides.
  • Real-time Stamina: monitors and tracks effort levels in real time during a ride so you can get feedback on training efforts or see how much longer you can keep up the pace.
  • Power Guide: manages efforts with energy targets throughout a race.
  • ClimbPro Climb Planner: analyze remaining climbs and the grade of each climb as you freewheel without navigating; or find climbs directly on the Edge and Garmin Connect™ smartphone app before heading out.
  • Multi-band GNSS: Cyclists can easily find their way with improved positioning accuracy through multi-band GNSS technology. In addition, Edge 540/840 works well in challenging environments such as tree-covered or even urban environments.
  • Solar charging: the Power Glass™ solar charging glass on solar models extends battery life up to 60 hours in battery saver mode, giving riders up to 25 extra minutes per hour during the day.

Robust design and great autonomy

All models in the Edge 540 and 840 series feature a 2.6-inch color display and physical button controls that work in all weather conditions. In addition, the Edge 840 series also includes a capacitive touch screen.

In terms of battery life, the Edge 540 and 840 series offer impressive battery life; non-solar models boast up to 26 hours of battery life in demanding use and up to 42 hours in battery saver mode, while the solar models can provide up to 60 hours in saver mode.

Advanced training, map and security features

The Edge 540 and 840 series feature Firstbeat Analytics™ workout information with which users of the brand are already familiar, such as VO2 max, training status and load, and recovery time. In addition, this cycling computer can be used in conjunction with one of Garmin's smartwatches to get a more holistic picture of overall health and wellness with information such as pulse oximeter, Body Battery™, advanced sleep tracking and scoring, and more.

In activity, the Edge 540 and 840 offer metrics that allow you to see how your body is performing in different environments, see your acclimatization to heat and altitude, and set up notifications during your run to let you know when it's time to rest or rehydrate.

In the advanced navigation features we can find functions such as Trendline™ Popularity Routing, which serves to highlight popular or well-traveled roads and trails, as well as searchable points of interest.

Edge 540 and 840 series users have access to Trailforks app content worldwide, allowing them to view routes and trail details anywhere.

Built-in safety and tracking features include LiveTrack, group messaging and incident detection for all cycling activities, including MTB. And of course Edge 540 and 840 are compatible with Garmin's Varia™ range of radar and lights, as well as inReach® devices with SOS and out-of-range communication.
