From the road to MTB: Northwave adapts High Tail technology in the new Extreme X
The Italian brand Northwave has presented the new Extreme X, a model designed for off-road competition that aims to become a reference within its catalog for XCO, XCM, and Gravel. These shoes introduce the High Tail technology into the world of MTB, previously launched on the road with the Veloce Extreme, with the goal of maximizing pedaling efficiency and power transfer.
The new Northwave Extreme X brings High Tail technology to off-road cycling
Northwave has been linked to off-road cycling for decades, with a presence in disciplines ranging from XCO to modern gravel. The brand recalls that one of the milestones in its history came with Paola Pezzo's Olympic gold in Atlanta 1996 (the first Olympic champion), and now it seeks to open a new chapter with this model aimed at maximum performance.

The key element of this model is the new Hyperlight HT sole, developed from 100% unidirectional carbon. Its design incorporates the High Tail system, which debuted on the road with the Veloce Extreme developed alongside Filippo Ganna.
This system introduces an asymmetric structure that extends into the outer heel area, providing greater support and stabilization of the foot during the pedaling phase.
According to Northwave, this new platform significantly improves stiffness compared to the previous generation with a 169% increase in torsional stiffness and a 41% increase in compressive stiffness.

These improvements translate into greater stability and reactivity, especially during accelerations or pace changes common in XCO or fast gravel races.
The sole is completed with a PowerShape® arch support to enhance efficiency and comfort during prolonged efforts, rubber and TPU inserts to improve traction while walking, and replaceable studs, which allow maintaining performance over time.

Northwave has also revised the upper design to make it lighter and optimize its volume, incorporating laser-cut ventilation zones to improve thermal regulation.
The interior includes the Anatomical Reticular Support (ARS 3.0) system, a structure that wraps around the foot to enhance stability during pedaling.
The fit is achieved through the SLW3 system, with a double micrometric dial that allows for precise and differentiated adjustment, micro-release via a side trigger, and easy regulation even while on the move.
The Underlap construction allows the layers of the upper to slide inward when adjusting the dials, creating a uniform fit without pressure points.

Additionally, the shoes include two interchangeable insoles to adapt the fit, one of 5 mm (Slim Fit) and another of 3 mm (Regular Fit). Both incorporate additional support for the arch and metatarsal area.
The new Northwave Extreme X are already available in stores in two colors (White and Black), with sizes ranging from 36 to 50 (including half sizes from 39.5 to 45.5) and a recommended price of €299.99.
