The incident occurred about 60 kilometers from the finish line when Del Toro had a problem with his bike and was forced to stop. In the confusion of the moment, the vehicles of UAE Team Emirates-XRG passed the position of the Mexican without being able to provide immediate assistance.
“I had a problem with the bike and I just didn't have time to make myself visible. I tried to signal to the cars, but two team cars passed right in front of me. Yes, there was some confusion,” Del Toro later explained.

The situation caused an unusual scene in the Tour de France. While assistance from his own team was arriving, several vehicles from other teams stopped to try to help the Mexican.
Among them was the second car from Visma Lease a Bike. Van Dongen later explained to WielerFlits that he decided to stop after seeing what happened and that one of his mechanics went to Del Toro to try to solve the problem.
“I was driving the second team car, so we were also the first 'second car' of the convoy. I saw how the two UAE cars passed right in front of him, so I decided to stop. Our mechanic ran to help him because the chain had come off and the shifting system had gone into protection mode after the impact.”

Finally, the assistance from UAE Team Emirates-XRG was able to reach Del Toro, but the way it was done ended up provoking the intervention of the commissaires.
According to the information published after the stage, mechanic Bostian Kavčnik rode in the opposite direction on the new bike of the Mexican to return to the place where the rider was. The UCI considered the maneuver as “irregular assistance to a rider” and imposed a fine of 500 Swiss francs, in addition to a yellow card.
Despite the setback, Del Toro was able to rejoin the race and would end up having a completely different outcome than what that mechanical problem seemed to anticipate. The Mexican returned to the peloton, participated in the chase of Mattias Skjelmose's attack, and ended up winning the stage in Montjuïc.
After the race, Del Toro also wanted to publicly thank the help received from rival teams during the incident.
“Fortunately, the second car of each team stopped to help me, especially Visma, INEOS, and actually everyone. I am very grateful for the help they wanted to give me. Much respect to all the teams.”
A breakdown, a complicated assistance, and a maneuver sanctioned by the UCI that ended up being the unexpected prologue to Isaac del Toro's first victory in the Tour de France.
