Three rainbow jerseys, a Green Jersey in the Tour, and a career marked by intelligence in racing. Óscar Freire begins a new chapter as an ambassador for Decathlon, bringing his experience as a world champion to both road cycling with Van Rysel and mountain biking with Rockrider.

Óscar Freire joins Decathlon to boost its commitment to cycling

Óscar Freire is part of the great history of Spanish cycling. The Cantabrian, a three-time world champion in road cycling, built a career marked by his instinct in sprints and a tactical intelligence that is rare in the international peloton. In addition to his three rainbow jerseys, he has seven stage wins in the Vuelta a España and four in the Tour de France, as well as a milestone that remains unique in our cycling: he is the only Spaniard to have won the Green Jersey of the Tour, the points classification that rewards consistency and the ability to always be at the front.

His achievements place him among the most influential riders of his generation and a reference for several generations of cyclists, both for his results and for his approach to competition.

Now, that experience accumulated over more than a decade at the elite level becomes part of Decathlon's project. The company has announced Freire's incorporation as the new ambassador for its cycling division, in a move aimed at strengthening its positioning in the sector and tightening its relationship with the cycling community.

The collaboration is not limited to image. According to the brand's communication, Freire will participate in various initiatives aimed at bringing cycling closer to enthusiasts of all levels. Among them stands out the Grupetha Decathlon, a social cycling project designed to promote group rides, meetings, and activities that foster community around cycling.

Additionally, his presence is expected at events linked to major calendar dates and reference events for cycling tourism and MTB, such as Quebrantahuesos, 7 Picos, or Sea Otter, where he will share his insights and direct experience from high-level competition.

“I thank Decathlon for the trust placed in me as a cycling ambassador. I am sure that together we will take the passion for this sport much further. It is a true privilege to be part of the Decathlon family. It is a brand that truly bets on quality, to the point of having its own professional team, with which cycling enthusiasts will surely enjoy a lot,” he said.

This agreement will allow Freire to train and compete with the entire road range of Van Rysel with which Decathlon competes in the World Tour, and with the Rockrider mountain bikes with which the brand competes in the XCO World Cup.

This is not a minor detail, as in recent years we have seen the Cantabrian participate in both cycling tourism events and MTB races, maintaining his active connection with cycling beyond his professional road career. With this new role, he will be able to combine both disciplines within the brand's technical ecosystem.

With the incorporation of a figure of this caliber, Decathlon strengthens its commitment to uniting elite experience, product development, and the cycling community, relying on one of the most recognizable names in contemporary Spanish cycling.
