Coquard wins, Pogačar withdraws and Enric Mas takes the La Vuelta lead in stage 8

Bryan Coquard has won the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España 2026 in Xeraco after defeating Mads Pedersen and Jordi Meeus in a sprint marked by chaos and several crashes. The Frenchman from Cofidis took advantage of a finish where Matthew Brennan was poorly positioned to achieve an unexpected victory.

However, the sporting result inevitably took a back seat after the abandonment of Tadej Pogačar following a hard crash about 32 kilometers from the finish, an incident that completely changes the course of this Vuelta.

Bryan Coquard surprises in Xeraco in a stage marked by Pogačar's abandonment

The 171-kilometer stage between Puçol and Xeraco seemed destined to become one of the calmest stages of the first week. For much of the day, Sinuhé Fernández was the only escapee and managed to hold more than five minutes while Visma-Lease a Bike comfortably controlled the peloton.

Fernández ended up being neutralized before the decisive stretch, coinciding with the approach to the intermediate sprint in Simat de la Valldigna and the Puerto de Barx.

Wout van Aert won the intermediate sprint and added another 20 points to strengthen his position in the points classification. Shortly after, he would also crown Barx in first position, on a day that seemed to unfold exactly according to the script planned for Visma.

Until everything changed.

Pogačar's crash completely changes the Vuelta

About 32 kilometers from the finish, before facing the Puerto de Barx, Tadej Pogačar suffered a heavy crash within the peloton.

The Slovenian lay on the asphalt after an incident in which Ben Tulett was also affected. Pogačar managed to get up, but ultimately could not continue and had to abandon the race in an ambulance with a head injury and a possible collarbone fracture.

The leader arrived at the stage with 3:50 advantage over Enric Mas and had won three stages during the first week. His abandonment leaves a classification that until that moment seemed to have a very clear owner completely open.

With Pogačar out of the race, Enric Mas becomes the new reference in the general classification with 1:11 minutes advantage over Felix Gall.

Azparren tries and the sprint ends in chaos

The race continued without its then leader and Xabier Mikel Azparren took advantage of the moment to attack after the descent of Barx.

The Spaniard managed to open about 20 seconds and held the lead for several kilometers, but the teams interested in the sprint began to organize and ended up neutralizing him about a kilometer and a half from the finish.

From there, a particularly tumultuous finish began.

Visma-Lease a Bike prepared the launch for Matthew Brennan again, with Christophe Laporte and Van Aert working in the front positions, but Brennan lost the wheel of his teammates within the last kilometer.

The crashes finished breaking the order. Just before the finish, another accident occurred in the peloton and, already within the final straight, a new pile-up left riders and bikes scattered across the road.

In front were the men who had managed to overcome the chaos.

Coquard surprises Pedersen and Meeus

Bryan Coquard was the one who best took advantage of the situation.

The Frenchman launched his sprint and managed to surpass two riders who were more favored on paper. Mads Pedersen finished second and Jordi Meeus third, both with the same time.

Ben Turner was fourth and Jordan Labrosse fifth, while Brennan, winner of two stages in this Vuelta, could only finish tenth after losing position at the most important moment.

For Coquard, it represents a particularly important victory after many years being among the most consistent sprinters in the peloton and on a day when he was not among the main candidates against Brennan, Meeus, or Pedersen.

But stage 8 will be remembered above all for another circumstance: The Vuelta that seemed headed for a Pogačar victory is left completely open overnight.
