ChatGPT arrives at bike route planning in partnership with Komoot
The outdoor navigation platform Komoot has introduced a new integration with ChatGPT that allows users to discover and plan routes through descriptions written in natural language. The system is designed for users to formulate their requests as if they were asking a question and receive personalized suggestions that can then be sent directly to the Komoot app for saving, editing, or using offline.
The new Komoot app allows discovering routes through artificial intelligence
According to the company, the tool allows users to request routes by indicating location, type of activity, distance, duration, or other specific characteristics simply by writing a request. The system queries Komoot's database, which contains more than seven million routes and four million points of interest, and returns suggestions tailored to the specified criteria.
Once the proposals are generated, the user can use the “Open in Komoot” function to transfer the information to the main application. From there, it is possible to modify parameters such as accumulated elevation, loop format, or surface preferences before saving the route or downloading it for offline navigation.
The integration also allows for more specific requests, such as asking for a certain number of options or choosing whether the results are displayed in a list format or on a map. In practice, this expands the possibilities compared to the traditional filters of the app.

In this context, the project manager at Komoot, Felix Tarcomnicu, justifies the integration by stating that “as people increasingly use ChatGPT for everything from daily tasks to travel planning, the Komoot app brings Komoot directly into the workflows that people are already using to find inspiration and shape their plans.” He adds: “This evolution of Komoot's navigation and route planning technology will make exploring the outdoors even easier for people around the world.”
The company summarizes the goal of the new development as the elimination of “friction” in adventure planning, an idea commonly associated with artificial intelligence-based platforms. However, this integration has also reopened the debate about the role of technology in the outdoor experience, and this extreme simplification of the planning process could come into tension with the exploration and adventure component inherent in activities such as mountain biking, gravel riding, and other modalities.
