Bordeaux awaits the sprinters: schedule and route of stage 7 of the Tour
After Tadej Pogacar's exhibition at the Tourmalet, the Tour de France completely changes scenery. The seventh stage will take the peloton from Hagetmau to Bordeaux over a route of 175 kilometers and just 718 meters of total ascent that should return all the spotlight to the sprinters.
Tour de France 2026: stage 7 Bordeaux awaits the sprinters
This time there are no major climbs, decisive hills, or difficulties near the finish that could serve to eliminate the fastest men. The main threat will be the heat and the accumulated fatigue from a particularly demanding first week. Otherwise, the profile offers few arguments to prevent the second mass sprint of this Tour.
And if the arrival in Pau was conditioned by a more complicated route, Bordeaux should allow for a much more direct comparison between Tim Merlier, Olav Kooij, Jasper Philipsen, Biniam Girmay, and the rest of the specialists.

This should also change the development of the race. The chances of a successful breakaway are low because numerous teams share the same objective, and the route facilitates the organization of the chase.
The only categorized climb will be the Côte de Beguey, located 38 kilometers from the finish. It is just 1, 3 kilometers at 4.5%, figures insufficient to put the sprinters in difficulty even if some team tries to increase the pace.
Before, 55 kilometers from the finish, the intermediate sprint will take place. A particularly important point for riders like Biniam Girmay and Mads Pedersen in their battle for the green jersey. From there, all attention will begin to shift towards the preparation for the finish.
The last 2.4 kilometers run almost in a straight line and on wide roads. There will be no particularly complicated turns or orographic difficulties that could justify a poor position. That should turn the finish into a battle between trains.
The first clear reference among the best sprinters
Tim Merlier faces a finish that fits perfectly with his characteristics, although Soudal Quick-Step arrives with a weakened lead-out train after the problems suffered in Pau and the withdrawal of Bert Van Lerberghe. The Belgian will have to take on more responsibility in positioning, but he remains one of the fastest riders in the peloton. Olav Kooij, winner of the fifth stage, approaches the day with a completely different situation: he has already achieved his first victory in the Tour and arrives in Bordeaux after proving he can beat the top specialists in a mass finish.
Jasper Philipsen is still looking to open his account of victories, and stage 7 represents one of his best opportunities. The Belgian has experience, speed, and the ability to find gaps in finishes of this type. Biniam Girmay should also be among the main candidates and, in addition to seeking victory, will have a special interest in accumulating points for the green jersey classification. Mads Pedersen will pursue the same goal, although a completely flat sprint with no prior fatigue favors his characteristics less.
Stage 7 presents few uncertainties about the race scenario, but many about its outcome. The sprinter teams have enough reasons to keep the breakaway under control, and the route offers few places to break the peloton.
