Newmen has just introduced its new Phase handlebars, a high-end carbon range that covers everything from XC to Downhill, with weights starting at just 166 grams. Among its features, the ability to incorporate the VariGrip system stands out, allowing the handlebar width to be adjusted up to 50 mm in a reversible manner without the need for any cutting.

Newmen Phase: new ultralight carbon handlebars that allow you to change their width without cutting them

The German manufacturer has renewed its offer of carbon handlebars with a family that combines a very low weight, a geometry specially developed to improve wrist position, and different configurations to adapt to each MTB modality.

The new Phase are offered both with fixed width and with the VariGrip system, a technology that Newmen had already used in its previous Advanced carbon handlebars and now integrates into a considerably lighter range.

Newmen Phase: starting at 166 grams and with versions for all MTB modalities

The range is divided into two families. The Phase XC-Trail are oriented towards Cross Country and Trail, while the Phase Enduro-DH have specific configurations for the most demanding modalities.

In the conventional versions, the XC-Trail model has a width of 760 mm and offers two elevation options, 10 and 25 mm. It is precisely in this family where Newmen achieves its lowest weight, with 166 grams declared for the 760 mm version, 10 mm of rise, and a clamp diameter of 35 mm.

The Enduro-DH models increase their width to 800 mm and allow choosing between 25 and 40 mm of elevation. Their weight starts at 180 grams.

In both cases, clamp diameters of 31.8 and 35 mm are available, and you can opt for the versions with VariGrip without giving up any of the geometry options.

The incorporation of the adjustable system means a small weight increase, but the figures remain competitive. The Phase XC-Trail with VariGrip start at 181 grams, while the Enduro-DH versions with this system range between 197 and 209 grams, depending on the configuration.

A handlebar whose width you can change as many times as you want

The most particular feature of the Phase is its compatibility with VariGrip, Newmen's patented system that allows modifying the effective width of the handlebar without having to cut its ends.

Its operation is based on a threaded connection between the inside of the handlebar and specific grips. By loosening the clamp, the grips can be rotated to move them inwards or outwards, thus adjusting the distance between the hands.

A scale located at the ends allows for adjustment with millimetric precision and, once the desired position is reached, you just need to tighten the clamps again.

In the Phase XC-Trail, the width can vary between 710 and 760 mm, while in the Enduro-DH the range goes from 760 to 810 mm.

This way, it is possible to try different widths and return to the previous configuration at any time. An adjustment especially interesting for those still looking for their ideal position on the bike or wanting to experiment with a narrower or wider handlebar depending on the type of ride.

The system requires using compatible grips, and Newmen offers three specific models, named Resia, Slat, and Blok, with different shapes, diameters, and hardnesses.

A geometry with 8° upsweep to improve wrist position

Beyond weight and adjustable width, Newmen has paid special attention to the ergonomics of its new handlebars.

All Phase models feature an 8° backsweep and 8° upsweep geometry. This latter value is higher than usual in many MTB handlebars and, according to the manufacturer, promotes a more natural wrist position.

The intention is to reduce fatigue in the hands and arms both when adopting an aggressive position on descents and during a more relaxed ride, without the need to excessively increase the sweep of the ends.

Newmen also highlights that the new Phase have been subjected to tests in its internal laboratory following resistance criteria superior to those required by official regulations. The brand does not set a maximum weight limit for the system for these handlebars.

Prices and availability of the new Newmen Phase

The XC-Trail range is already available while the Enduro-DH versions will hit the market on December 15.

The recommended prices are as follows:

  • Newmen Phase XC-Trail: 160 €
  • Newmen Phase XC-Trail VariGrip: 160 €
  • Newmen Phase Enduro-DH: 165 €
  • Newmen Phase Enduro-DH VariGrip: 165 €

Newmen maintains the same price for the fixed width versions and those equipped with VariGrip, although the latter require specific grips to take advantage of the adjustment system.

With the Phase, the German brand expands its catalog of lightweight carbon components and offers a solution that combines low weight, different geometries, and the possibility of continuing to adjust the position on the bike without permanently modifying the handlebar.
