A fine of 400 francs and 20 seconds for Tom Pidcock in stage 15 of the Tour

Tom Pidcock's day in stage 15 of the Tour de France had consequences beyond the sporting result. The commissioners decided to sanction the Pinarello-Q36.5 rider for committing the same infraction twice during the race, resulting in a time penalty, a financial fine, and the loss of points in the mountain classification.

According to the commissioners' report, Pidcock violated article 4.3 of the UCI regulations, which prohibits propelling oneself by holding on to or pushing off from a race vehicle. The judges determined that the Briton committed this action twice, so all the penalties for that infraction were applied in duplicate.

The double infraction means for the Briton:

• 400 Swiss francs fine (200 CHF for each infraction)
• 20 seconds penalty in the general classification (10 seconds for each action)
• 8 points less in the mountain classification (4 points per infraction)
• 30 UCI points less (15 points for each infraction)

The loss of points in the mountain classification is particularly significant. Pidcock had earned eight points by finishing second at the Col de la Croisette, a first-category climb, but the sanction makes him lose exactly that same amount, effectively nullifying the gain made during the stage.

As a result, the Briton drops one position in the mountain classification and now occupies seventh place with 28 points. Without that sanction, he would have climbed to fourth place.

The penalty comes after Pidcock managed to break into the day's breakaway, his third consecutive attempt, in an effort to continue climbing positions in the general classification. For much of the stage, he even found himself virtually among the best in the classification thanks to the work of his teammate Brent Van Moer.

After the stage, Pidcock himself joked about his ability to get into breakaways in statements released by his team:

“I think I'm getting quite good at getting into breakaways. I only tried once and I was up front again. Three days in a row. Has anyone been in a breakaway for three consecutive days while being in the Top 10 of the general classification? I don't think so. Many records can be broken today, but so can I.”

However, he also acknowledged the enormous fatigue that took its toll on him during the final climb: “In the last five kilometers... I was just dragging myself to the top. I was completely empty.”

The general classification barely changes for Pidcock

Despite the 20-second penalty, the Briton sees little change in his situation in the fight for the general classification. He remains ninth, still within the Top 10, although now a bit further from Lenny Martinez, who is in eighth place.
