A disaster in the UAE just three days into the Giro

The Giro 2026 has concluded its three inaugural stages in Bulgaria and will begin its route in Italy tomorrow. But in just 3 days, the race has completely changed, and for some teams more than others. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG has gone from presenting a very strong block for the general classification in Bulgaria to being seriously weakened after the loss of Jay Vine, Marc Soler, and Adam Yates.

The Giro devastates UAE in Bulgaria: Soler, Vine, and Yates abandon after the big crash

Tension and rain were the protagonists of two major crashes in just three days; the first occurred while launching the sprint of the inaugural stage, but the one that caused the most casualties was in stage 2. The pile-up happened about 20 kilometers from the finish in the stage between Burgas and Veliko Tarnovo, just as they approached the climb of Lyaskovets. The rain had turned the road into an extremely delicate track, and a crash at the front of the peloton triggered a domino effect that caught nearly twenty riders.

The images of Adam Yates trying to get back on his bike covered in mud and blood were some of the hardest scenes of the day. The Brit, who was a favorite for the general classification, managed to finish the stage, losing almost fourteen minutes, but the real problem arose hours later. UAE confirmed before the third day that Yates suffered a concussion and several lacerations to his ear, so he did not start the last stage in Bulgaria.

The situation was even worse for Marc Soler and Jay Vine. Both abandoned during the stage and were taken to the hospital. Subsequent medical tests confirmed a pelvic fracture for the Spanish cyclist and an elbow fracture along with a concussion for the Australian.

The atmosphere in UAE after the arrival of the second day was desolate. Mauro Gianetti, the team's top official, summarized the situation with great bluntness: “The whole team has fallen apart and is screwed.”

Now, the team will surely take advantage of the first rest day today, Monday, to rethink the race. The team had built its entire strategy around Adam Yates for the general classification, with Marc Soler and Jay Vine as two fundamental pieces in the mountains and in the tactical control of the decisive stages.

The idea was to combine experience with the explosiveness of young riders like Morgado, Christen, or Arrieta, in addition to the engine of Bjerg and the offensive capability of Narváez. Now that block has been completely dismantled even before reaching the first big week of mountains.

Without Yates and without two of their main climbers, UAE is forced to reinvent its Giro. From this moment on, the team could shift its focus towards stage hunting, taking advantage of the freedom of riders like Narváez, Morgado, or Christen in nervous and medium mountain stages.
