With good weather and some vacation time, many of us are looking forward to escaping the crowded beaches and embarking on a great adventure on the bike. A circular route that surrounds the entire Sierra Nevada through its 450km and 10,100m of elevation gain, reaching heights of up to 2000m and offering a unique view of its different landscapes and towns, from Almería to the Alpujarras.

A great adventure perfect for summer over 8 days and traditionally starting from the town of Güéjar Sierra in Granada in a clockwise direction. It generally travels on dirt tracks and paths and has numerous access points or escape routes from the different towns it passes through.

Montañas Vacías. Montes Universales - Sierra de Javalambre - Sierra Gúdar, Teruel. 700 km route adaptable up to 150 km

"The Spanish Lapland" is how the Celtiberian Range is known, an area located in the center of Spain and one of the most sparsely populated in Europe, where the population density is less than one person per square kilometer.

In this spectacular environment, a 680km gravel route with 13,000m of elevation gain runs through the Montes Universales, the Sierra de Javalambre, and the Sierra de Gúdar.

Transpyrenees. Pyrenees, Catalonia - Basque Country. Estimated time of 18 days

A legendary MTB route born in the 90s that connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean through the spectacular Pyrenees mountain range.

With its 1000km and 27,000m of positive elevation gain crossing some of the most famous mountain passes in this area over about 18 days, it is a real challenge for the most prepared bikepackers.

Portuguese Way of St. James. Porto/Lisbon - Santiago de Compostela. From 6 to 12 days

This is undoubtedly the most popularly known route, due to its historical significance and large number of people, however, we will avoid the classic French route to delve into the Portuguese way, less crowded and with a much less aggressive profile.

This route has some variations, such as the one that runs along the coast with less elevation gain. This, combined with its main route along paths and tracks, makes it ideal for gravel lovers.

It starts from Lisbon or Porto, with 630km or 270km respectively, varying its duration between 6 or 12 days.

Altravesur. Cádiz-Valencia. 30 days

The longest route presented here and at the same time the most current. Designed by Logan Watts, it connects Cádiz with Valencia through all the natural parks near the Mediterranean. It shares sections with the Transnevada, Transandalus, the Don Quijote route, some Greenways, and several Long-Distance Trails.

With nothing less than 1300km and 33,500m of elevation gain, it is proposed as a real 30-day journey in which to deeply explore all of the Spanish Mediterranean. The author recommends using a mountain bike, although a large part of the route could be done with a gravel bike.
