Vingegaard takes the trend to the extreme and chooses 150mm cranks

It has been several years that professional cyclists are opting to ride shorter cranks that offer a series of biomechanical advantages. The latest to join this trend has been Jonas Vingegaard, who in his debut a few days ago at the Volta ao Algarve surprised with a radical reduction in the size of the crank used on his bike compared to what he had on his bike last year.

Shorter cranks, Jonas Vingegaard's latest move to gain ground on Pogacar

150 mm! Just as road bike tires are getting thicker, it seems that we are immersed in a race to mount shorter and shorter cranks, and the record, for now, seems to be held by Jonas Vingegaard, who has mounted this tiny measure on his bike for the 2025 season.

It is even more surprising when we consider that until last year Vingegaard used a conventional size of 172.5, which means shortening the cranks by more than 2 centimeters!, a real madness in biomechanical terms that totally modifies the pedal stroke, especially the angle between the femur and hip that has a great influence on how the leg is able to apply force.

The cranks did not display any brand, but, in appearance, they seem to be SRAM Rival cranks, although the American brand does not offer this size, so it is expected that they have been specially made for the Danish cyclist.

In this way, Jonas Vingegaard adopts one of the trends in biomechanics that his great rival Tadej Pogacar was already using with the intention of closing the gap with the Slovenian. We remind you that, in addition to the better force application allowed by shorter cranks, by avoiding extreme angles between the hip and femur that limit pedaling efficiency, it also gives more room for the biomechanic to lower and advance the cyclist's position so that it adopts a more aerodynamic position on the bike.

He is not the only Visma-Lease a Bike cyclist who has chosen to mount shorter cranks in Algarve, as, for example, shorter cranks were also seen on Wout van Aert's bike, although, in his case, choosing a more moderate reduction with cranks that, in appearance, were between 160 and 165 mm.
