Topeak converts Presta valves into Turboflow and announces its electronic pump

Just over a year ago, Schwalbe launched its Click Valve presta valve system, aiming to give a twist to a bike component like the presta inflation valve, which has hardly changed for decades. Now, Topeak joins the improvement of this element with its Turboflow system, which seeks to maximize airflow in presta valves.

In road and gravel cycling, as well as in more competitive mountain biking, presta valves, the traditional thin valve, are the most common interface for inflating our tires. The reason for their proliferation, despite the fact that it is more complicated to use gas station pumps if we need to adjust the pressure on the go, is their greater resistance due to their entirely metal structure and the need to create smaller holes in the rims, which is important in modern carbon rims as they represent a weak point in the structure.

However, their advantage is also their weakness, as their small diameter greatly limits the airflow that can pass through them, which often poses problems for tubeless users who may find it difficult to introduce enough flow at once to perform the initial seating of the tire. Additionally, with the use of increasingly larger tire volumes, the large amount of air needed to reach the desired pressure and the limited diameter of the valve, further reduced by what the valve core allows to pass, make inflating tires very slow and tedious, especially with manual pumps.

To solve this, Topeak proposes its new Turboflow valve cores that can be installed in any conventional valve and modify the sealing system that prevents air from escaping to achieve greater flow. Specifically, Topeak claims that the airflow through its Turboflow valves is 3 times greater than in the conventional system.

A system that, externally, remains fully compatible with current inflators and perfectly adaptable to any conventional valve, although not all, as it is necessary for the valve to have an external thread, which the vast majority of those on the market do. The difference is that the Turboflow core screws onto the valve externally instead of internally like conventional cores. An aspect that, in the event of a puncture, requires removing the core to take out the valve, although this is a minor inconvenience.

To accompany the launch of its new Turboflow valves, Topeak has added the E-Booster Digital Mini mini-compressor to its range, which has a tiny size of just 5.4x3.4x7.2 cm and a weight of 120 g, allowing it to be comfortably carried in a jersey or in our tool bag.

The Topeak E-Booster Digital Mini can reach up to 8 bar of pressure, features a display to visualize the pressure in PSI or Bar with a precision of ± 2 PSI, and a battery that allows inflating 6 tires of 700x40c to 2.7 bar (40 PSI) or 4 tires of 29x2.4 to 1.7 bar (25 PSI) with a single charge.

This Topeak E-Booster Digital Mini inflator is available for a price of €124.99, while the new Turboflow valves can be found in a kit of two complete valves for €39.99, another with only two Turboflow cores to replace those of valves we already have, priced at €22.99.
