Tom Pidcock wins the Amstel Gold Race 2024

After his crash in the Itzulia and miraculous recovery to participate in his first Paris-Roubaix, British rider Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) arrived at the Amstel Gold Race 2024 as one of the favorites and with the intention of achieving his first victory of the season here. And so it has been, Pidcock has managed to win in a sprint after a tough race in which Mathieu van der Poel went unnoticed.

Despite an early breakaway and some setbacks that even led to a change in the route of the Amstel Gold Race 2024 due to a traffic accident before the race, the race stabilized when the peloton swallowed up the escape group 70 km from the finish line.

With a total of 253.6 kilometers between Maastricht and Berg en Terblijt, all eyes of the Amstel Gold Race were on world champion Mathieu van der Poel, who already knows what it's like to win here after his victory in 2019. It was expected that he would be the protagonist of the race today, something that was anticipated until the end but never materialized.

Tom Pidcock played his cards well and after joining a final breakaway that got ahead of the peloton 30 km from the finish line, he also managed to select the group to stay alone with Hirschi (UAE), Benoot (Visma-LaB), and Vansevenant (Soudal-QuickStep) in the last kilometer. Practically from that final banner, a long and agonizing sprint was launched that Pidcock managed to resolve to take the victory by the narrowest margin.
