This former colleague of Oier Lazkano questions the current anti-doping system
In an interview with the Danish cycling website Feltet, the former Movistar cyclist and recent signing of Lidl-Trek expressed surprise at how the anti-doping system has failed in the case of the sanction for anomalies in the biological passport of Oier Lazkano and how it is incredible that for so long no one had detected anything.

Mathias Norsgaard does not hold back in speaking about the Lazkano case
With phrases like “Sometimes when it smells bad, it is shit” or “he was good in the classics but the Dauphiné stank too much”, the Danish cyclist, now with Lidl-Trek, Mathias Norsgaard, spoke about his former teammate in Movistar Team, Oier Lazkano, after his notorious sanction following the detection of anomalies in the biological passport.
“You are glad to catch the cheaters, but I am surprised at how he got away with it. There are doctors in Movistar, and I am very surprised that they did not detect the problem. What do we have the system for?” Norsgaard reflected when asked about the Alava cyclist.

The Dane also spoke about the 2024 season, the year of Oier Lazkano's international breakthrough, where he competed with the best during the spring. “In 2024 he had a solid season in the classics, and two months later finished 9th in the Critérium du Dauphiné, climbing better than ever”, something that Mathias Norsgaard found suspicious.
He also explained that the last time he coincided with Lazkano was last summer in Andorra, just a few weeks before the UCI sanction came to light, after Lazkano had been completely absent since the Paris-Roubaix race.

Norsgaard described his teammate as mysterious and intelligent while highlighting some peculiarities, such as being perfectly up to date with politics or anecdotes like sitting down to chat with a restaurant chef for hours after dinner while drinking wine.
