The video they uploaded to social media allowed for the arrest of the perpetrators of the Giro incident
The serious incident that occurred during the sixth stage of the 2026 Giro d'Italia has already had consequences. The Italian police confirmed the identification and arrest of the two young men who attempted to push and hit several riders in the peloton when there were about 47 kilometers left to reach Naples. What is most striking is that the very video that allowed them to be recognized was recorded and shared by themselves on social media.
They recorded the video for social media while trying to hit Giro cyclists and ended up arrested
The images, which quickly went viral during the stage, show several young men waiting for the peloton at a roundabout between Brusciano and Marigliano while one of them records with a mobile phone and the other two literally launch themselves at the riders as the group passes by.
The video shows how they try to touch and even push some cyclists while the peloton passes through the area at high speed. Gianmarco Garofoli was one of the riders they reached, while the Portuguese Afonso Eulálio managed to push one of the young men away with his arm to avoid contact.
The scene caused enormous outrage during the race due to the real risk of a massive fall it generated. In a fast and tightly packed peloton, any contact could have ended in a serious accident.

According to Italian media, the police were able to quickly identify those involved thanks to both television images and the video shared on social media. The two young men, aged 19 and 20 and residents of San Vitaliano, were reported to the Nola Prosecutor's Office for endangering public safety during a sporting event.

Additionally, authorities confirmed that one of them had a prior record for theft, a detail that further aggravates their legal situation.
Although they are currently free, both face significant penalties. Among them is the DASPO, a measure widely used in Italy to prohibit access to sporting events for individuals involved in violent or dangerous acts. This sanction can last for several years and may be accompanied by financial fines.
Within the peloton, the reaction was immediate. Alberto Bettiol explained after the stage that the situation could have ended much more seriously. "They don't realize the speed at which we are going. If we touch someone, we all get hurt,” the Italian told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Giro organization also publicly reacted, reminding on social media that there is “a limit that should not be crossed” when following a race from the road.
This episode again highlights the issue of safety in professional cycling and a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly common, where fans seeking attention on social media do not consider the consequences of their actions, even when it means endangering riders and spectators.
