The unofficial Gravel World Championship is coming, and it could shape the future of 32": favorites, schedules, and how to watch Unbound Gravel 2026
The Unbound Gravel 2026 takes place on Saturday, May 30, the most prestigious gravel race in the world and the event that many still consider the true unofficial World Championship of the discipline.
UNBOUND Gravel 2026, the unofficial World Championship of gravel that could forever change the future of 32” wheels
This year's edition not only celebrates the 20th anniversary of Unbound, but it could also become a key moment for the future of gravel because it will be the grand competitive debut of 32-inch bicycles developed by a major brand. While thousands of cyclists will once again face the wild trails of Kansas, much of the attention will be on the new SCOTT Gravel RC 32 that reigning champion Cameron Jones will ride in the toughest and most media-covered scenario possible.

Long before the UCI organized its first Gravel World Championship in 2022, the best specialists on the planet were already coming to Emporia every year to compete in the most important race of the modality.
That’s why Unbound maintains a special prestige within cycling. Winning it still holds a value comparable to that of the great classics and no other gravel event gathers such a diverse lineup, with riders from the WorldTour, mountain biking, ultra-distance, and professional gravel.
What started in 2006 as a resistance adventure with just 34 participants has transformed into a gigantic event capable of attracting thousands of cyclists from over 50 countries. For a week, Emporia ceases to be a small town in Kansas, USA, to become the absolute epicenter of world gravel.

And although gravel has professionalized enormously in recent years, Unbound still retains its original essence. Here, it’s not just the strongest rider who wins. Those who manage their equipment, pace, nutrition, and the inevitable mechanical problems that arise after more than 300 kilometers of broken trails also survive.
Course: Unbound 2026 recovers the most mythical sectors of its entire history
The 20th anniversary edition will have a course designed specifically to honor the history of the race. The flagship event will once again be the Unbound 200, although this year it will actually cover 207 miles, over 330 kilometers, and about 2,700 meters of accumulated elevation.
The route will head south from Emporia for the first time since 2023 before returning to the finish line through some of the most legendary sectors of these two decades of competition.
Texaco Hill, Teter Hill, Council Grove, Lake Kahola, and Highland Hill return in an edition that seems built around the greatest icons of Unbound. Sharpes Creek Road also makes a comeback, one of the most remembered sectors since that brutal muddy edition of 2015.
The organization has even recovered areas like the DD rollers or Kahola Hill to reinforce that sense of historic course. All of this on the most feared terrain in world gravel.

Because the Flint Hills of Kansas remain the great judge of the race. Their sharp stones are famous for destroying tires and wheels even on bicycles specifically prepared for this type of event. Completing Unbound without major breakdowns continues to be almost as difficult as fighting for victory.
Moreover, weather forecasts point to possible rain in the days leading up to the event, which could completely change the race's development. The mud of Kansas can block entire bicycles and transform a very fast competition into a true battle for survival.
Sofía Gómez Villafañe arrives as the top female favorite
In the women's category, Sofía Gómez Villafañe is the main reference after a spectacular first half of the season. The Argentine arrives after winning the Sea Otter Gravel and the Traka 200, confirming a form that positions her as the main candidate for victory.

Even so, the competition will be enormous. Karolina Migoń will defend the victory achieved last year in Emporia and remains one of the most resilient and reliable riders in international gravel.
We will also have to keep a close eye on Larissa Hartog, one of the great revelations of the season, in addition to names like Cecily Decker, Lauren De Crescenzo, Rosa Klöser, or Carolin Schiff.
Cameron Jones returns with the pressure of defending the number one bib
The men's race once again brings together some of the best specialists on the planet and the spotlight will inevitably be on Cameron Jones.
The New Zealander surprised the world last year by winning Unbound as a wildcard of the Life Time Grand Prix and that victory became the turning point of his sports career. Now he returns as the reigning champion and will be one of the major technical protagonists of this edition thanks to the new SCOTT Gravel RC 32.

But the competition will be enormous. Keegan Swenson and Matthew Beers appear as two of the big favorites after joining forces this season, while Simon Pellaud will seek revenge after finishing second in 2025.
There will also be dangerous riders like Mads Würtz Schmidt, Hugo Drechou, Lachlan Morton, Lukas Pöstlberger, Thomas De Gendt, Ivar Slik, or Romain Bardet, who continues to expand his gravel calendar after closing his time in the WorldTour.
Unbound could change the future of 32” wheels
But beyond the sporting battle, this year's edition could mark a technical turning point within competitive gravel. As it is an event outside UCI regulations, Unbound has been functioning for years as a huge laboratory where brands test extreme solutions that later influence the entire industry.
And in 2026, all eyes will be on the first 32-inch gravel bikes.
SCOTT has officially presented its new Gravel RC 32, a prototype developed specifically to compete in Kansas and that will be used by Cameron Jones and Robin Gemperle during the race. This is the most serious bet seen so far by a major brand around this new wheel size.
The choice of Unbound seems completely logical. The endless fast tracks, broken areas, and sharp stones of the Flint Hills make this race the most demanding scenario possible to test advantages in rolling capacity, stability, absorption, and traction.
Cameron Jones himself, the reigning champion of the Unbound 200, did not hide his enthusiasm with the bike's performance during the pre-race tests. “This bike makes you feel like you’re floating over the surface,” explained the New Zealander. Jones even went further by stating that “I will be racing on the road while the rest will be racing gravel.”
The rider also particularly highlighted the dynamic behavior of the bike on fast and aggressive terrains. “The traction while pedaling and the grip in corners are revolutionary,” he stated, before leaving one of the most striking phrases of the entire presentation. “I’m honestly scared of how fast I’ll be able to enter corners when we race on circuits with real descents.”
Robin Gemperle, another rider who will use the SCOTT Gravel RC 32, also expressed confidence in the potential of this new platform. The Swiss explained that he started testing an unfinished version of the bike, with several key parts still in development, but from the first tests, he was clear about the project's potential. He finally summarized his feelings by stating that “this big guy is really the wheel size that competitive gravel, and especially UNBOUND Gravel, has been waiting for.”
The big question now is whether SCOTT will be the only brand appearing in Kansas with 32-inch bikes. Several companies have been quietly working around this size, and Unbound represents the perfect showcase to present them for the first time.
Because if the 32” wheels achieve convincing results in the most important gravel race in the world, the impact could be enormous. Unbound has already helped popularize trends like wider tires, more stable geometries, or integrated storage systems in the past. Now the same could happen again with this new generation of giant bikes.
