The last stage of the Tour de France will be much shorter due to the fires

The organization of the Tour de France has announced a last-minute change in the final stage of the 2026 edition due to the serious situation caused by the fires affecting various areas of France, especially the Gironde department. The decision was made jointly between ASO and the Paris Police Prefecture, following a request from the Ministry of the Interior to redistribute part of the security resources to the areas affected by the fires.

The fires force a modification of the last stage of the Tour de France 2026: there will be a much shorter route

The statement explains that emergency services and security forces are fully mobilized to combat the fires and protect the population, making it necessary to reduce the planned operation for the Tour's arrival in Paris.

The stage goes from 133 to only 89 kilometers

As a result, the 21st and final stage of the Tour de France, scheduled for this Sunday between Thoiry and Paris, will see its route reduced from the initially planned 133 kilometers to only 89 kilometers.

The organization has also modified all the logistics for the day and the official start will be at 17:50 from the finish line on the Champs-Élysées.

From that moment on, the cyclists will compete in two additional laps of the Champs-Élysées circuit before facing the already announced passage through Montmartre, where the stage winner will be decided. The finish is expected at 19:45.

A decision motivated by the national emergency

The statement emphasizes that the modification responds to an exercise of “national solidarity” with the territories affected by the fires. The goal is to free up part of the police forces that were initially going to ensure the safety of the route between Thoiry and Paris to reinforce the resources deployed in the areas where the fires remain active.

The Police Prefecture and the management of the Tour de France have expressed their gratitude for the understanding of riders, teams, local authorities, sponsors, and fans regarding measures described as “exceptional,” but necessary given the circumstances.

Thus, the Tour de France 2026 will maintain its traditional conclusion in Paris, although with a significantly shorter route and an organization adapted to an emergency situation affecting a large part of the country.
