However, the first day of this mountain triptych may not be the one that decides the general classification. With two even more demanding stages ahead, many favorites might choose to manage their efforts and open the door to one of the most valuable breaks of the entire race.

After that, a broken terrain will prevent any relaxation before facing the final climb to Orcières-Merlette. Its slopes are not extreme. (10.5 km at 6%), although they are enough to make a difference after almost five hours of effort.

With the two major alpine stages still to be contested, teams like UAE Team Emirates-XRG or Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe might prefer to only control the differences and save energy for the decisive days. If that happens, the breakaway will have many chances to reach the finish with an advantage.

Favorites

Richard Carapaz stands out as one of the top candidates after a very offensive Tour and having shown that he still has the legs to make a difference in the mountains. Tobias Halland Johannessen, Mauro Schmid, Harold Tejada, Valentin Paret-Peintre, and Thymen Arensman also fit the ideal profile for a stage of this type. Among the Spaniards, Javier Romo and Pablo Castrillo will look to take advantage of one of the last opportunities for stage hunters, while it is important not to lose sight of Matteo Jorgenson, Egan Bernal, or Quinn Simmons if they manage to filter into the breakaway.

Everything points to a day of wear rather than definitive attacks among the Tour favorites. But precisely for that reason, stage 18 could become one of the most open of the entire last week.
