The IOC halts the arrival of cyclocross at the Winter Olympics
Cyclocross will remain, at least for the moment, outside the Winter Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee confirmed this Thursday that it will not incorporate new disciplines such as cross or cyclocross into the program, thus maintaining a model focused exclusively on snow and ice sports.
Cyclocross is left out of the 2030 Alpine Olympic Games
The decision was announced by Kirsty Coventry after the meeting of the IOC Executive Committee held in Lausanne. The leader explained that the organization does not currently consider opening the door to winter disciplines contested outside the traditional snow or ice environment, which rules out the possibility of seeing cyclocross as an Olympic sport at the French event in 2030.
The proposal had gained momentum over the past year after Sebastian Coe publicly raised the possibility of incorporating events such as cross or cyclocross into the winter Olympic calendar. The idea aimed to take advantage of the fact that both modalities are mainly contested during the winter months and have a consolidated competitive structure at the international level.

In the case of cyclocross, the possibility of entering the Olympic program would have represented a historic leap for a discipline with a huge tradition in countries like Belgium, the Netherlands, or France, but it still has not managed to fit within the Olympic ecosystem. The modality has been growing in audience, professionalization, and media impact, especially thanks to the influence of riders like Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert, or Tom Pidcock, who are capable of attracting a large audience even outside the specific cyclocross calendar.
However, the door slam does not seem definitive. The IOC itself confirmed the creation of a specific working group to study the possible incorporation of traditionally summer sports in future editions of the Winter Games after 2030. In other words, cyclocross will not be in the French Alps, but the door is not completely closed for the future.
