The huge time trials helmets have become fashionable for everyone

If last year the time trial helmet of Visma-Lease a Bike was a topic of conversation, a design trend that has been spreading to different time trial helmets from other brands, now it's the turn of aerodynamic road helmets that are starting to evolve in that direction to try to achieve similar advantages against the wind.

From time trial to day to day. This is how aerodynamic road helmets are evolving

Already last year we began to see how aerodynamic helmets for everyday road use were starting to change to emulate certain technical solutions of their time trial counterparts such as, for example, slightly covering the ears like the Nirvana models from Kask or the Poc Procen Air.

Now, this trend of imitating time trial helmets is spreading among the different proposals of the brands and, among the copied characteristics, the increase in volume could not be missing in order to achieve better aerodynamics.

The reason for this is to integrate more helmet volume with the cyclist's body so that engineers can better control how the air flows from the helmet to the shoulders or back in order to make the transition as smooth as possible and, therefore, generate less resistance.

We can also see a similar inspiration in the Specialized Evade 3 which acquires a width and shapes that instantly remind us of the S-Works TT 5.

In principle, this is an evolution that does not have a greater technological limit than the one established by the UCI. The maximum cycling body determines that helmets must comply with current homologations, like other garments, not have additions or modifications that are not part of the structure, and adapt to a maximum size set by a box of 450x300x210 mm, a margin that gives manufacturers a lot of flexibility.

As long as these premises are met, there is no limitation when choosing a helmet, and it would even be allowed to compete in a road stage with a time trial helmet. However, the point that still differentiates these helmets from those used daily is that time trial models only prioritize aerodynamics, without any other consideration, while in daily use, factors such as weight and, above all, ventilation become essential.

Additionally, safety is also important, not only of the helmet which is taken for granted, but also the cyclist's perception of the environment. These helmets usually completely or partially cover the ears, which can add a risk in the most important sense when riding in a fast-paced peloton, so it would not be surprising if, as road use models continue to radicalize, the UCI ends up taking action to establish stricter limits.
