The 2026 Vuelta al País Vasco kicks off with Del Toro, Ayuso, Roglic, and Seixas in an open battle for the txapela

Road 03/04/26 16:01 Migue A.

The Itzulia, the Tour of the Basque Country 2026, returns to the scene with one of the most demanding routes on the WorldTour calendar and with a participation that mixes established leaders and the new generation that is already winning major week-long tours. From April 6 to 11, the Basque Country will once again dictate the outcome in a relentless race, where each day has the real potential to alter the overall standings.

Tour of the Basque Country 2026: a route that offers no rest

The 2026 edition maintains the identity that has made this event one of the toughest of the year. Six stages, over 800 kilometers, and a cumulative elevation gain that far exceeds 16,000 meters create a scenario of continuous wear and tear. There is no possible transition, not even on days that on paper seem less decisive.

The start in Bilbao introduces a short but sufficiently selective time trial from the first day to make a difference. It won't decide the race, but it will condition subsequent movements and force some favorites to attack very early.

From there, the race enters its natural terrain. The stage towards the Mendukilo area presents constant wear that can favor breaks or provoke the first movements among contenders. The intermediate stages, with finishes on circuits like Basauri or Galdakao, are ideal terrain for ambushes, with a buildup of climbs and high pace that punishes the weaker teams.

The major turning point will come in Eibar. The queen stage concentrates the greatest elevation gain and the most demanding climbs, with ascents like Ixua or Krabelin that have historically made a difference. It is the day when the favorites must show themselves without reservations and where, under normal conditions, a significant part of the overall standings will be decided.

Far from being a formality, the final stage towards Bergara maintains the tension. Shorter but equally demanding, it opens the door to last-minute changes if the differences are minimal.

Del Toro, Ayuso, Roglic, and Seixas lead an open battle in Itzulia 2026

The fight for the overall presents an unusual balance. Isaac del Toro arrives as one of the fittest riders on the calendar after winning Tirreno Adriatico and chaining top-level results at the start of the season. His progression places him on the same level as the big names in the peloton.

Opposing him will be Primoz Roglic, who knows this race like few others after winning it twice and who remains a reference when it comes to managing efforts and finishing in demanding finales. His experience in this type of route makes him one of the top candidates for victory.

Juan Ayuso approaches the Itzulia with an extra motivation. In a new competitive environment, the Spaniard seeks to reaffirm himself as one of the leaders of the new generation. His ability to perform in all terrains fits perfectly with a route that offers no respite.

This group is joined by Paul Seixas, who has earned a place among the main favorites on his own merits. His profile breaks with the classic pattern of a week-long tour rider. He is explosive, resilient, and especially dangerous in chaotic scenarios. In a race like the Itzulia, where attacks can come at any moment and from any point on the route, his ability to anticipate makes him a real threat to everyone.

Behind, the list of contenders is extensive. Riders like Antonio Tiberi, Pello Bilbao, Ben Healy, or Cian Uijtdebroeks add depth to an overall that is expected to be very tight. The difference may lie more in tactical reading than in brute strength.

The route favors an open dynamic, with multiple teams capable of hardening the race from afar. Teams like UAE, Red Bull-BORA, Lidl-Trek, or Bahrain Victorious have several options and can play different cards as the overall evolves.

This will not be a race of classic control. The accumulation of wear and the absence of clearly decisive finishes in several stages invite distant movements and unpredictable situations. In that context, team depth and adaptability will be key.

Schedules and broadcasting

The Itzulia 2026 can be followed live through Eurosport and the Max platform, which will provide complete coverage of each stage. Broadcasts will begin in the late afternoon, around 15:30 on most days, with slight variations on the opening and final stages. Arrivals are expected around 17:30.

The Tour of the Basque Country once again presents itself as one of the most demanding events on the calendar. Its combination of accumulated toughness, unpredictable routes, and level of participation makes it an ideal setting to measure the true form of the big names in the peloton.
