Terrifying fall of Pidcock in the Volta: "I am very lucky to be okay."
The fifth stage of the Volta a Catalunya left one of the most shocking scares of the day with the hard fall of Tom Pidcock, who was involved in a dangerous accident during a descent as the race entered its decisive phase. The British rider from the Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team went off the road after misjudging a curve while drinking, ending up in a ravine with no one knowing he was there.
Brutal fall of Pidcock on descent and goodbye to his chances in the Volta
The incident, which occurred on a technical and fast section, was much more serious than the final consequences reflected. Pidcock fell down an embankment in a scene that he himself described as typical of “one of those terrifying falls you see in a race.” For a few moments, moreover, his situation generated uncertainty, as he was far from the road and out of sight of the rest of the peloton.

Despite this, the British rider managed to return on his own, change bikes, and continue in the race until he crossed the finish line, although completely out of any competitive struggle. He finished the stage in 116th position, 29 minutes behind Jonas Vingegaard, a time that made him disappear from the general classification, where he now occupies 74th place, more than 29 minutes from the lead.

After the stage, Pidcock himself reassured about his condition with clear statements. He explained that he was drinking during the descent when he miscalculated the curve and went off, falling into the ravine. He acknowledged the severity of the impact but insisted that he was fine and that he felt fortunate to have been able to communicate via radio, as no one knew exactly where he was at that moment. He also confirmed that he would undergo medical examinations to rule out any problems.
While waiting for those tests, the initial assessments are positive and do not indicate serious injuries, allowing the British rider to continue in the race. However, the sporting blow is evident, as the Volta is completely ruled out for him in terms of general classification after a day that went from aspirations to survival in a matter of seconds.
