Santa Cruz reinvents the Blur in its 2027 version: more travel, new geometry, and a clear commitment to modern XC

Road 04/08/26 13:06 Migue A.

The Blur has always held a very defined place within the Santa Cruz catalog: a lightweight, responsive bike focused on maximizing performance in competition. With the new generation presented today, that essence remains, but the California brand acknowledges that cross-country is no longer the same as it was five or ten years ago and adapts one of its most iconic models to this new reality.

The main novelty is that the new Santa Cruz Blur now offers 120 mm of travel both front and rear across the entire range. However, the change goes much further than those 13 extra millimeters compared to the previous competition version. Santa Cruz has revised the frame, geometry, and suspension to create a more capable bike when the terrain gets tough, without losing the efficiency that has always characterized the model.

Santa Cruz Blur 2027: a new version for racing... and for enjoying the rest of the year

Until now, the Blur was divided into two versions, one more racing with 107 mm of rear travel, and another Trail variant that increased that figure to 115 mm. The new generation eliminates that distinction and unifies the entire platform into a single configuration of 120 mm.

This is not an isolated decision. In recent years, cross-country has evolved towards much more technical courses, with jumps, rock gardens, and descents that require bikes to offer a much higher margin of safety and control than previous generations. The new Blur is born precisely to respond to that evolution without giving up being a competitive bike.

Santa Cruz summarizes it by defining it as a bike valid for both fighting for a podium and tackling any demanding ride between races.

The geometry changes as much as the suspension

The increase in travel comes with a complete revision of the frame's dimensions. The data that best reflects this change is the head angle, which goes from 67.1° to 66°, a figure that brings the Blur closer to downcountry bikes and improves stability when speed increases or the terrain becomes more demanding.

The reach also significantly increases. Depending on the size, the new Blur gains around 15 mm compared to the previous generation, while the bottom bracket is positioned 6 mm lower to lower the center of gravity.my27-blur-angled-red-1785844412127-1

Santa Cruz accompanies these modifications with shorter stems —50 mm in standard mounts and 60 mm in Race versions— and a seat tube with 75° of inclination, seeking a more centered position on the bike both on climbs and descents. Additionally, the seat tube reduces its length to allow for the installation of longer travel dropper posts.

More travel, but also a different suspension

The brand maintains the monopivot rear suspension system with flexible links that the Blur already used, although it claims to have completely revised its operation.

The goal was not only to increase travel but also to modify the suspension response to provide greater support in the mid-stroke. According to Santa Cruz, this new kinematics allows the bike to maintain a firm feel when pedaling hard and, at the same time, better utilize all the suspension when larger impacts occur.

It is a coherent evolution with the overall approach of the bike: to gain capability without sacrificing the efficiency required for XC competition or a marathon.

A completely revised frame

Another focus of development has been the frame. Although the Blur increases travel and adopts a more ambitious geometry, Santa Cruz claims to have reduced the amount of material needed to manufacture it.

To achieve this, it has decreased the diameter of several tubes, refined their shapes, and redesigned the carbon layup almost completely. The frame is made exclusively from CC carbon, the highest level within the brand, and claims a weight of 1,980 grams.

Santa Cruz also maintains its lifetime warranty, one of the brand's characteristic features.

Two ways to understand the same bike

Although all Blurs share the frame and travel, Santa Cruz offers two clearly differentiated configurations.

The Race versions are oriented towards competition and feature a flat handlebar, 60 mm stem, remote lockout for the suspensions, and Maxxis Rekon Race tires to prioritize performance in accelerations and climbs.

The standard mounts opt for a more versatile ride thanks to a double-height handlebar, 50 mm stem, and Maxxis Aspen AT tires, seeking a more comfortable and secure behavior on technical routes.

In both cases, all bikes come with a dropper post and chain guide as standard, further demonstrating that Santa Cruz understands current XC from a much broader perspective than pure competition.

Santa Cruz Blur 2027: Seven builds from 4,999 to 12,499 euros

The range of the new Blur consists of seven complete bikes, in addition to the frame alone.

Entry to the family comes with the Blur Deore, for 4,999 euros, while the most exclusive version is the Blur XX AXS Race Flight Attendant RSV, priced at 12,499 euros.

A Blur that reflects where the market is heading

More than just a simple update, the new Blur represents Santa Cruz's adaptation to the evolution taking place in the cross-country segment. The bike retains the lightweight and competitive character that has always accompanied it, but adopts solutions that just a few years ago seemed reserved for short-travel trail models.

With 120 mm of suspension, a clearly more aggressive geometry, and a revised suspension to offer a greater margin when the terrain gets tough, the Blur is no longer just a bike designed for racing. Now it also wants to convince those looking for a lightweight dual-suspension bike capable of performing at its best on race day without giving up enjoyment on the rest of the rides throughout the year.
