Neither more screens nor more pockets: the ICU approves new technical restrictions

The UCI continues with its strategy to increase safety in competition and has announced two new regulatory measures that will directly affect the equipment of the riders. Starting in 2028, the maximum size of cycle computers allowed in races will be limited, and from July 1, 2026, front pockets on jerseys will be prohibited, except for a specific exception to accommodate the radio device.

The UCI limits the size of cycle computers and prohibits front pockets on jerseys for safety reasons

The decisions were communicated after the latest meeting of the Management Committee of the Union Cycliste Internationale and are part of a package of measures focused on the safety of the riders.

The UCI sets a limit on the size of cycle computers

The most notable measure affects cycle computers. The international federation has modified article 1.3.006 bis to establish maximum dimensions of 126 x 71 mm for devices used in competition. The rule will come into effect on January 1, 2028.

Although the limitation does not affect the most popular current models on the market, it aims to prevent devices from continuing to grow in size in the future. For example, models like the Garmin Edge 1050, the Wahoo ELEMNT ROAM, or the Hammerhead Karoo are currently below that limit.

As the UCI explains, the decision responds to concerns about the amount of information that riders receive during races.

The organization believes that the constant increase in data available on screen can increase the cognitive load on cyclists and, consequently, lead to errors or accidents.

The current regulations already allow displaying parameters such as heart rate, body temperature, or sweat rate, although it still prohibits the use in competition of data from glucose or lactate sensors.

Additionally, the UCI has announced new specific penalties for accessories and elements installed on the bicycle or carried by the riders, combining fines and sporting penalties to reinforce compliance with the regulations.

Goodbye to front pockets on jerseys

The second measure will have a much more immediate application. From July 1, 2026, any pocket located on the front of the jersey will be prohibited.

The UCI explains that during this season it has detected several riders using front inner pockets to carry nutrition products that, in many cases, were practically inaccessible during the race.

According to the federation, these pockets significantly alter the silhouette of the rider and provide a measurable aerodynamic advantage. The decision comes after various studies have analyzed the aerodynamic benefits derived from modifying the shape of the body through elements housed under clothing.

The UCI justifies the prohibition by arguing that there is a direct relationship between aerodynamic improvements, increased speed, and the potential severity of accidents. Furthermore, it considers that this practice also raises issues related to competitive equality among teams.

The new wording establishes that pockets must be located exclusively on the back of the jersey. The only exception contemplated will be a possible front pocket intended solely to house the radio communication device.

These decisions add to other recent initiatives promoted by the UCI regarding safety, including the controversial project to limit maximum gear ratios, the judicial process of which remains open after the federation decided to appeal the recent favorable ruling to SRAM.
