Michael Valgren surprises from the breakaway and wins stage 5 of the Tirreno-Adriatico, Del Toro regains the lead
The fifth stage of the 2026 Tirreno-Adriatico left one of those victories that mix endurance, strategy, and experience. The Danish rider Michael Valgren triumphed in Mombaroccio after a long breakaway, resisting the final attack from the favorites, thus achieving his first victory since 2021. The day also brought changes in the general classification, with Isaac del Toro regaining the lead.

The 184-kilometer stage between Marotta-Mondolfo and Mombaroccio started with a very high pace and numerous attempts to break away in the first kilometers, some of which were led by Mathieu van der Poel. Finally, a front group formed that included riders such as Michael Valgren, Julian Alaphilippe, Joan Bou, Jack Haig, Georg Zimmermann, Sjoerd Bax, and Edward Planckaert.
As the kilometers passed, the breakaway's lead grew to over four minutes, allowing the group to maintain real chances of contesting the victory. In the peloton, the teams of the general classification riders maintained control without launching a desperate chase, reserving energy for the demanding final circuit.
The race was decided in the final climbs to the Santuario Beato Sante, a short but steady ascent that was tackled twice before the finish.

In the section before the last ascent, the leading group was whittled down to practically just Valgren and Alaphilippe. It was then that the Dane launched a sharp attack about five kilometers from the finish, leaving the Frenchman behind and allowing him to start the final climb solo.

Behind, the favorites began to move. Isaac del Toro increased the pace and ended up forming a small chasing group alongside Matteo Jorgenson, while the leader Giulio Pellizzari tried to limit losses with riders like Primo? Rogli? and Giulio Ciccone.
The Danish rider's lead quickly diminished in the final kilometers. Del Toro launched several attacks on the final climb and managed to distance Pellizzari, allowing him to recover time in the general classification.
Still, Valgren managed to crest the last hill with a small margin that he defended on the descent and the short final rise to the finish. The EF Education-EasyPost rider crossed the line with a few seconds to spare over the pursuers.
Del Toro won the sprint of the chasing group to take second place, while Jorgenson completed the podium for the day.
The victory marks a very significant return for Valgren, who had not won a race since 2021. At 34 years old, the Dane managed to withstand the favorites in an explosive finish and secure one of the most notable victories of his recent career.

The stage also had consequences for the general classification: thanks to his final offensive, Isaac del Toro regains the lead of the Tirreno-Adriatico, taking it from Giulio Pellizzari.
