Just at the events where mountain bikes with curved handlebars have become most popular, the regulations have completely changed. The organization Life Time has updated its rules for the 2026 season prohibiting the use of road or gravel handlebars in the Leadville Trail 100 and the Little Sugar MTB. Starting this year, all participants must compete with flat or riser handlebars.

According to the organization Life Time, the decision responds to cyclist safety criteria and compatibility with the course. The new rule will be enforced through pre-race inspections and controls during the race, with disqualification as a possible sanction for those who violate the regulations.

The restriction does not extend to the entire calendar. Life Time confirms that drop handlebars will still be allowed in the rest of the circuit events, such as Chequamegon MTB Festival, Sea Otter Classic Gravel, Unbound Gravel, Big Sugar Gravel.

This measure puts an end to a debate that has been ongoing for years in Leadville. In 2025, Keegan Swenson won the men's category with a drop handlebar, while in the women's category, Kate Courtney won with a flat handlebar and a very aggressive aero position in which Courtney used the crown of her fork as a handlebar and even installed the shifters there.

We remind you that these races, which are mountain bike events but with large stretches of very fast tracks, are outside UCI regulations and their organization is quite permissive with configurations. Therefore, it will be interesting to see what kind of solutions their participants propose now to gain aerodynamics. The goal will no longer be to choose between a flat or road handlebar but to optimize the aero position within the MTB frame.
