Jonas Vingegaard finishes the Giro with another amazing performance in Piancavallo and claims his fifth stage victory
Jonas Vingegaard arrived at the Giro d'Italia as the top favorite and, with only the final parade in Rome left, he will finish as the absolute dominator. The Danish rider won again in stage 20, the last major mountain day, after Visma-Lease a Bike controlled the race from afar and turned the double ascent to Piancavallo into a new collective demonstration.
Jonas Vingegaard wins in Piancavallo and seals the Giro d'Italia
The stage, 200 kilometers between Gemona del Friuli and Piancavallo, seemed open to a breakaway, but Visma made it clear from the start that they wanted to finish the race with another victory. The Dutch team allowed a manageable breakaway with Jonas Geens, Axel Huens, Jack Haig, Larry Warbasse, Andreas Leknessund, Manuele Tarozzi, and Guillermo Thomas Silva, but never gave them a truly dangerous lead.

The race began to harden on the first ascent to Piancavallo, where Tim Rex and Victor Campenaerts started to cut into the breakaway's lead. Visma's work was constant and made it clear that the goal was not only to defend the pink jersey but also to seek another stage victory.

On the final ascent, the survivors of the breakaway began to lose ground as Visma continued to select the group of favorites. Andreas Leknessund, Larry Warbasse, and Jack Haig held on at the front, but the pace of the peloton ended their options before the final attacks began.
Vingegaard doesn't wait and leaves everyone behind again
With 11 kilometers to go, Jonas Vingegaard launched his attack. Felix Gall was the only one who could respond for a moment, but the Danish rider once again demonstrated that he has been on another level in this Giro. He broke away solo, caught the last breakaway riders, and quickly opened a gap of over a minute.
Behind, Gall, Jai Hindley, Derek Gee, Thymen Arensman, Egan Bernal, and Afonso Eulálio fought their own battles for the podium, the Top 5, and the young riders' classification. But the victory was already decided: Vingegaard crossed the finish line solo and added his fifth stage win in this edition.

Gall and Hindley maintain the podium before Rome
The day did not alter the main positions on the podium. Felix Gall finished second in the stage alongside Jai Hindley and Derek Gee, allowing him to maintain second place overall. Hindley also held onto his third position against Thymen Arensman, who finished a few seconds later alongside Egan Bernal.
Afonso Eulálio suffered again, but he held on long enough to secure sixth place overall and the young riders' classification against Davide Piganzoli. The Portuguese rider thus concludes one of the great revelations of this Giro, after having worn the pink jersey for a good part of the race.
Visma closes the Giro with total authority
With this victory, Vingegaard raises his personal tally of stage wins in the 2026 Giro to five and practically seals his overall victory before the stage in Rome. Visma-Lease a Bike, which had already won the queen stage with Sepp Kuss, thus completes one of the most convincing collective displays of this edition.
The Giro will arrive tomorrow in Rome with Vingegaard as the virtual champion, Gall and Hindley heading for the podium, and Paul Magnier with one last chance to secure his fight for the points jersey in the final stage.
