Jhonatan Narváez finishes a long breakaway and wins stage 3 of the Tour of Switzerland

The third stage of the 2026 Tour of Switzerland ended with a prize for UAE Team Emirates-XRG. On a day that on paper seemed like the best opportunity for the surviving sprinters of the race, the breakaway prevailed again and it was Jhonatan Narváez who raised his arms in Bad Ragaz after surpassing Xandro Meurisse in a final head-to-head.

Jhonatan Narváez completes UAE's work and conquers stage 3 of the Tour of Switzerland

The stage, at 157.4 kilometers, concentrated all the mountainous difficulty in the first half of the route. After overcoming the climbs of Wildhaus and Schwägalp Passhöhe, the riders faced nearly 60 kilometers of practically flat terrain until the finish, a scenario that invited thoughts of an organized chase by the peloton.

However, the race once again demonstrated that in this Tour of Switzerland breakaways have a lot to say.

Narváez gets into the decisive move

After numerous attempts to break away during the first climb of the day, the race definitively split in the mountainous area. For a few kilometers, even Tadej Pogacar appeared in a front group alongside about thirty riders, although that situation ended up being neutralized.

The final selection came later, when Jhonatan Narváez and Xandro Meurisse took advantage of the movements on the Schwägalp climb to open a gap over their pursuers.

Behind them, riders like Emiel Verstrynge, Antonio Tiberi, Aleksandr Vlasov, Michal Kwiatkowski, and Maximilian Schachmann tried to react, but none managed to connect with the leading duo.

In the descent, moreover, Narváez showed great technical superiority and even opened several meters over Meurisse, although the Belgian managed to return to his wheel to keep his options alive.

The peloton never managed to get close

The advantage of the two escapees continued to grow, surpassing four minutes with still more than 60 kilometers to go.

Visma Lease a Bike took on much of the chase, thinking of a mass finish for Matthew Brennan. Lidl-Trek, EF Education-EasyPost, and Jayco AlUla also collaborated, but the margin never decreased quickly enough.

The situation became even more complicated by the torrential rain that appeared during the second half of the stage. The wet roads and changing conditions favored the leading men, who maintained perfect collaboration for hours.

Meanwhile, UAE played their cards smartly. With Narváez in the breakaway and not posing a threat to Pogacar's leadership, the Slovenian team had no interest in helping the chase. On the contrary, Tim Wellens and his teammates took care of controlling any attempts to accelerate the pace in the main group.

Narváez finishes the job

With ten kilometers to go, the difference was still around a minute, and everything pointed to the victory being decided between the two escapees.

Meurisse tried to save energy for the sprint, aware that Narváez has a superior top speed. The Ecuadorian, for his part, took on a good part of the final pulls to ensure that the peloton did not return.

The strategy worked. The two riders arrived together at the final straight, and Narváez confirmed the predictions by winning the sprint to add another victory for UAE Team Emirates-XRG.

Behind, the peloton arrived too late to contest the win, and Pogacar crossed the finish line without any surprises, comfortably retaining the yellow jersey before the decisive time trial this Saturday.

A day marked by withdrawals

The stage also saw several important withdrawals. The heat, the accumulated toughness of the first days, and later the rain caused numerous abandonments.

Among the riders who did not finish were Casper van Uden, Kaden Groves, Marius Mayrhofer, Cédric Beullens, Rémi Cavagna, and Gil Gelders.
