It is news that we all took for granted, but it has not been until now that Geraint Thomas has officially confirmed that 2025 will be his last active season, his 19th as a professional cyclist. A retirement to which he has already set a specific date. It will be at the Tour of Great Britain that will take place between September 2 and 7.

Geraint Thomas' retirement marks the end of the golden era of British cycling

When Geraint Thomas ends his sports career in early June, only one of the British winners of the Tour de France will remain active, Chris Froome, who presumably will also have to end his career at the end of the year when his contract with Israel-PremierTech ends.

The Welshman has officially announced on his social media what was already an open secret. A tremendously fruitful career in which, obviously, the victory in the 2018 Tour de France shines at the highest level. "Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would be a professional for 19 years. There will be plenty of time to reflect, but before that, I have some important races to prepare for."

Thomas has started his 19th active season maintaining his usual routines, with all the Australian races in January and, last Sunday, he made his European debut by participating in the Figueira Cycling Classic in Portugal. A calendar that will continue with Volta ao Algarve, Tirreno-Adriatico, Volta a Catalunya, and Tour de Romandie. His possible participation in the Tour de France remains uncertain, and before the Tour of Great Britain, he may take part in the Tour of Germany.

Although he has been considering retirement for several years, Geraint Thomas seems to have made the decision this time, "I don't want to get to that point where I say 'Oh, I should have stopped last year because I don't want to be here now.' The most important thing, to be honest, is family."

He also does not hide that he would like to participate in the Tour de France, "It would be great to go to the Tour de France once more. Arrive there in the best possible shape, basically assuming that Carlos Rodríguez will be there competing for the general classification as our leader, then I would love to help him as best I can. Then, obviously, try to win a stage; I think that, in my last year, winning a stage in the Tour would be great."
