Van Aert, Van der Poel and Pidcock: the stars face each other again in the mud
As is characteristic of this event and after the rains in the area last week, Gavere will give us a real cyclocross race with a technical circuit, muddy, steep climbs and wide track sections where all kinds of overtaking attempts can be made.
And although we talk about a new opportunity to see the "Big Three" in action, the truth is that after winning all the cyclocross races he has entered so far, Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) will start in Gavere as the main favorite for victory.
We will see if the British Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadier) has used these two days of rest to recover from the illness that kept him away from the fight for victory in the last races. And for his part Wout van Aert (Jumbo Visma) recently admitted that it was currently difficult to reach Van der Poel's level in cyclocross and opted for a conservative attitude, but that does not rule him out of a likely fight for the podium places.
Due to their consistency throughout the season, the cyclists Lars van der Haar (Baloise Trek Lions) and Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal) are other candidates for the podium places.
Current overall classification Men's Elite World Cup
- Eli Iserbyt (BEL) 255 points
- Pim Ronhaar (NED) 198 points
- Lars van der Haar (NED) 191 points
- Joris Nieuwenhuis 188 points
- Niels Vandeputte 171 points
Van Empel dreams of remaining undefeated
In the women's race, there is no doubt that the champion Fem Van Empel (Jumbo-Visma) will be the main favorite to win the Gavere World Cup. The current world champion has won the 11 races she has competed in this season and after a break of more than 2 months, with her last victory in Antwerp confirmed that her level is still within the reach of very few.
Lucinda Brand (Baloise Trek Lions) and her teammate Shirin van Anrooij could be the closest rivals to Van Empel in Gavere. Both have recently shown that they can lead a top-level race and in Gavere they could have the opportunity to beat Van Empel for the first time.
We cannot leave out of the favorites Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Alpecin-Deceuninck). The current leader of the overall classification, is being the most consistent cyclist this year and will undoubtedly be one of the protagonists in the fight for the podium.
Current overall classification Women's Elite World Cup
- Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado 257 points
- Lucinda Brand 190 points
- Manon Bakker 161 points
- Inge Van der Heijden 151 points
- Leonie Bentveld 144 points
