Ganna dominates the time trial at the Giro and Eulálio saves the pink jersey by just 20 seconds
Filippo Ganna turned the only time trial of the 2026 Giro d'Italia into an absolute exhibition. The Italian from Netcompany Ineos won with enormous superiority over the 42 kilometers between Viareggio and Massa, while Afonso Eulálio managed to save the pink jersey by just 20 seconds against Jonas Vingegaard, who did not have his best day but did cut a significant part of his disadvantage in the overall standings.
Ganna flies at almost 55 km/h and wins the longest time trial of the Giro since 2015
The stage arrived as one of the major turning points of this Giro. It was the longest time trial of the race, the only one against the clock in the three weeks, and a clear opportunity for specialists to make a difference. Ganna left no doubt: he clocked a time of 45:53 and rode at almost 55 km/h on average, leaving the second-placed rider almost two minutes behind.
Ganna crushes all the splits
From the first intermediate point, it was clear that the fight for the stage had only one owner. Ganna was already 41 seconds ahead of Sjoerd Bax after 16.7 kilometers and continued to increase the gap at every reference.
In Forte dei Marmi, after 28.9 kilometers, his lead had already surpassed a minute over Rémi Cavagna and Thymen Arensman. In the third split, at 38.4 kilometers, the Italian continued to extend the margin, making it clear that no one was going to come close to his time.

The final victory came with a 1:54 advantage over his teammate Thymen Arensman and 1:59 over Rémi Cavagna. For Ganna, this is the eighth stage victory of his career in the Giro and a demonstration of strength in a specialty where he returned to compete at another level.

Arensman, great winner among the favorites
Netcompany Ineos completed a perfect day. In addition to Ganna's victory, Thymen Arensman posted the best time trial among the general classification men and made a huge leap in the standings.
The Dutchman finished second in the stage and gained time on all his direct rivals. He clearly surpassed Felix Gall, Jai Hindley, Giulio Pellizzari, and also Jonas Vingegaard, which allows him to move up to third place in the overall standings.
Derek Gee also emerged strengthened with a good time trial, while Ben O’Connor limited the damage well on a day that particularly penalized the less powerful climbers.

Vingegaard cuts time, but does not seize the pink jersey
The main focus was on Jonas Vingegaard. The Dane had a real chance to take the pink jersey from Afonso Eulálio, but he did not find his best version against the clock.
Vingegaard finished 13th at the finish line, exactly 3 minutes behind Ganna and 1:06 behind Arensman. It was a performance below expectations for the Giro's top favorite, although sufficient to cut a lot of time from the Portuguese leader and clearly get closer to the pink jersey.
Eulálio struggled, especially in the second half, but managed to maintain his lead. The Portuguese needed to finish within a very tight margin and ended up saving the pink jersey by just 20 seconds. The Giro thus maintains an unexpected leader, but with Vingegaard practically on his heels before the second half of the race.
