Five hours later, you are still comfortable: this is how the Castelli Espresso 2 performs on the road
We have been riding for several weeks with the Castelli Espresso 2 set in Clay (jersey) and Paprika (shorts). And yes, we can already say that it has been hard to take it off to try other things. But let's go step by step.
We tested the Castelli Espresso 2: real comfort for Gran Fondo without losing performance
Castelli is very clear about the difference between a cyclist who seeks pure aerodynamic performance and one who prioritizes comfort on long rides. For the former, there is the Rosso Corsa range. For the latter—and that includes many of us—the Espresso line was born.
The brand's approach for this line is to create gear that is fast but, above all, feels invisible on the body when you have been pedaling for four or five hours. Spoiler: they achieve it.

The first thing that catches your attention about the Espresso 2 jersey is how thin it feels to the touch. The AirO Stretch fabric has that silky sensation that you only find in high-end ranges, and an elasticity that allows it to adapt to the body without creating those annoying pressure points that we all know.

As for ventilation, this is where it really shines. On long climbs in the heat, the sweat evacuation capacity is among the best we have tested. You reach the top sweating as expected, but the fabric dries so quickly that you arrive at the descent without that unpleasant feeling of moisture clinging to your body.

The sleeves follow the trend we see in the professional peloton: straight cut that reaches almost to the elbow, without the need for aggressive silicone bands to stay in place. They simply stay there. The three rear pockets with a pleated design are more than enough to carry everything you need on long rides, and the fourth zippered pocket is perfect for storing your phone, keys, or card without worrying about them falling out mid-climb.
Paprika Shorts: here is the true star
If we had to choose just one piece from this set, it would undoubtedly be the shorts. And not just because of that earthy orange tone that looks spectacular in photos.

The Espresso Doppio fabric offers a medium-high compression with a softness we didn't expect. It is not that aggressive racing compression that ends up being uncomfortable after three hours; it is more of a firm but gentle hug.
The finish of the leg openings deserves special mention: sharp cut with silicone grippers that distribute pressure very evenly. There are no bands that constrict or marks after hours on the bike. It’s one of those details you appreciate when you’ve been pedaling for four hours.

But what really makes the difference is the Progetto X2 Air Seamless chamois. We are talking about the best that Castelli has in its catalog. Two independent layers that work to prevent friction, with variable density padding that still feels fresh and firm even after more than five hours on the saddle. We are not exaggerating.

The elastic mesh straps are extremely comfortable and allow for total chest expansion without that 'corseted' feeling that some high-end shorts have. And a useful detail: it includes an additional rear pocket to carry a gel, extra bar, or even your phone.

This is how it performs on the road
We have ridden with this set for many kilometers, and there are several details that have convinced us in our day-to-day use.
The drying of the Clay jersey is surprising. Those climbs where you reach the top soaked and then freeze on the descent are a thing of the past with this fabric. The moisture disappears with a speed that makes a real difference.
The Paprika shorts confirm why the Progetto X2 chamois is the choice of professionals in the grand tours. After rides that have comfortably exceeded five hours, we still felt comfortable. And the Doppio lycra has an elasticity that makes you feel no restrictions at any moment of the pedal stroke.

What we loved
The Progetto X2 Air chamois is, without a doubt, the absolute reference for those seeking comfort on long distances. The AirO Stretch fabric of the jersey offers a combination of lightness and breathability of the highest level. And the combination of Clay/Paprika colors breaks with the conventional and looks really good, both on the bike and in photos.
What you should know before buying
Castelli sizing tends to run small, as is common with the brand. If you are not looking for an extreme racing fit, our recommendation is to go up one size from your usual. You won’t regret it.
The Castelli Espresso 2 set is for those who do not want to choose between going fast or going comfortably. It is a serious investment—the jersey is around €130 and the shorts around €180—but every euro is justified by the quality of the chamois and the technology of the fabrics.
If you are a cyclist who enjoys long distances, cycling tours, or simply want gear that makes you forget you are wearing it, this set should be on your radar.
