Fewer cables in sight without the need for a premium bike thanks to the new Shimano levers
SHIMANO has announced the expansion of its Clean Cockpit concept to more affordable component segments with the launch of new hydraulic brake and shift levers designed to provide cleaner cable routing and a more integrated aesthetic in the handlebars.
Shimano brings its Clean Cockpit concept to more affordable ranges with new hydraulic levers
The Japanese company first introduced this concept in 2023 alongside the more advanced versions of the Shimano CUES family. Its goal was to reduce the visual impact of cables in the handlebar area and improve the integration of components, a trend increasingly present in modern bicycles.
Until now, this solution had been mainly reserved for high-end bicycles. With this new update, Shimano extends the Clean Cockpit philosophy to the mid-range so that more manufacturers can offer bicycles with a tidier cockpit without resorting to premium setups.
A cleaner handlebar for everyday bicycles
According to Shimano, the handlebar area has become one of the key elements in bicycle design. The arrangement of cables, the position of the levers, and the integration of various components influence both the aesthetics and the overall feel that the bicycle conveys.

The arrival of the Clean Cockpit concept to more accessible ranges will allow brands to design bicycles with a more modern and refined appearance, something that until now was limited to higher-priced models.

The company emphasizes that this update is part of its strategy to make practical improvements that, while not revolutionary, provide real benefits in areas such as integration, ease of use, and the overall design of the bicycle.
New compatible hydraulic levers
The update includes new versions of hydraulic brake and shift levers compatible with the Clean Cockpit philosophy within different mid-range groups in Shimano's catalog.
The main novelty lies in the way the cable routing is organized around the handlebars, allowing for a cleaner appearance and reducing the usual visual clutter in bicycles equipped with hydraulic drivetrains and brakes.
Important compatibility notice
Shimano has also pointed out a limitation that both manufacturers and users should keep in mind.
The new brake levers work correctly when the optical gear indicator is positioned below the handlebars, as is the case with the SL-M315 shift lever or the current CUES shift levers.
However, if a lever with an optical indicator positioned above the handlebars is used, Shimano recommends continuing to use the current brake levers, as the new versions are not designed for that configuration.
The availability of references and configurations will also depend on each region through Shimano's local distribution network.
