Evenepoel wants revenge in the Amstel Gold Race 2026: schedules and how to watch
Cycling changes scenery after the cobbles and enters one of its most recognizable weeks. The terrain of short, repeated, and explosive efforts arrives, where weight gives way to watts per kilo and where races rarely follow a clean script. The 2026 Amstel Gold Race opens the Ardennes triptych with a particularly open stage and a recent history that still weighs heavily. Remco Evenepoel returns with the intention of settling scores after last year's defeat, in a race that will take place on Sunday, April 19, in the hills of Limburg.
The Ardennes triptych kicks off with a more unpredictable Amstel than ever
The northern classics are behind us, along with everything they entail. Here, cycling transforms. Long straights give way to narrow roads, chains of short climbs, and a constant wear that does not allow hiding at any moment.
The Amstel Gold Race is the first piece of this block that will continue with the Flèche Wallonne and culminate in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. It is a race that rarely responds to a single profile. Here, pure punchers, stage racers, or even cyclists coming from the cobbled block with solid form can win. That mix is precisely what makes this edition a bit more chaotic than usual.
Favorites to win the Amstel Gold Race 2026
The name that marks the preview is Remco Evenepoel. He arrives after a unique year and an intense spring in which he has demonstrated a very high level, with victories, constant presence, and a third place in Flanders that confirmed his form even in terrain that is not his own. The doubt is not in his legs, but in how he manages a race that punishes moves that are too far away.

His main rival should have been Tom Pidcock, but after his fall in the Volta Catalunya, it seems that, barring a last-minute surprise, he will be out of competition for at least a few more weeks.
Surrounding him are several names that fit particularly well in this course. Mattias Skjelmose arrives with a different role. He is no longer a surprise; he is the reigning champion. His victory last year against Pogacar and Evenepoel changed his position in these types of events. He is a rider who understands race timing well and does not need everything to be decided in a single way.
Matteo Jorgenson is another name that fits perfectly in the Amstel profile. Consistent, strong on broken terrain, and increasingly solid tactically, he could be one of the big beneficiaries if the favorites watch each other too closely.

Ben Healy reappears as one of the most dangerous riders in these types of scenarios. His ability to move from afar and take advantage of moments of doubt makes him a constant threat in a race that tends toward disorder.
In the background, but very present, are riders like Romain Grégoire, with an ideal profile for these types of classics, or a Healy who always finds a way to get into the race. Names like Kwiatkowski, who knows this race perfectly, or Laporte if the race is resolved in a small group, should also be considered.
Route of the Amstel Gold Race 2026
The Amstel returns to its essence. A long, nervous route with not a meter of rest, accumulating up to 33 climbs over 257 kilometers between Maastricht and Valkenburg.
During the first two-thirds of the race, the wear is constant. There are no major climbs, but rather an endless succession of short ascents that gradually empty the legs. It is a race that breaks apart without the need for major attacks.
The first key point appears with the entry into the decisive stretch and the first climb to the Cauberg, more than 80 kilometers from the finish. This climb is a classic of the Amstel, but it was left out in previous editions, reintroduced last year, and the organization has maintained it in 2026. It is the moment when the race begins to take shape and positioning becomes crucial.
From there, the most demanding chain of the day arrives. Gulperberg, Kruisberg, Eyserbosweg, Fromberg, and Keutenberg concentrate one of the toughest sectors of the entire spring in just 15 kilometers. This is where the race usually breaks apart for real and where moves start to become definitive.
After that block, the return to the Cauberg with just over 20 kilometers to go marks the prelude to the final circuit. A last loop of almost 20 kilometers that includes the Geulhemmerberg and the Bemelerberg before facing the final climb.
The third and final passage over the Cauberg will once again be the key point. With just 1.7 kilometers to the finish from its summit, all signs point to it being the place where the race will be decided, whether with a definitive attack or with a very reduced selection.
