Dversnes surprises everyone in Milan and defeats the peloton by seconds
The fifteenth stage of the Giro d'Italia seemed designed for a massive sprint in Milan, but Fredrik Dversnes and three brave escapees shattered all predictions with a display of endurance and cold blood. The Norwegian from Uno-X Mobility culminated an agonizing day after surviving the constant harassment of the peloton and finished the breakaway with a flawless sprint against Mirco Maestri, Martin Marcellusi, and Mattia Bais.

Fredrik Dversnes surprises the sprinters in Milan after resisting the peloton's harassment
After Jonas Vingegaard's display in Pila the previous day, the Giro returned to the sprinters' terrain with 157 kilometers completely flat between Voghera and Milan. Everything pointed to a mass arrival, and teams like Soudal Quick-Step, Lidl-Trek, Unibet Rose Rockets, and NSN Cycling took on the chase of the breakaway early on.
But the escape of the day found a perfect combination of understanding, strength, and doubts in the peloton. Mattia Bais, Mirco Maestri, Martin Marcellusi, and Fredrik Dversnes managed to open a gap from the start and never let the advantage collapse completely.

The final circuit in Milan, completely flat and very fast, seemed to clearly favor the sprinters. However, the sprinter teams had to expend more riders than expected to reduce the gaps, and the margin remained dangerously high with only a few kilometers to go.
As the finish approached, doubts began to arise in the peloton. Soudal Quick-Step was working for Paul Magnier, Unibet Rose Rockets for Dylan Groenewegen, and NSN Cycling for Ethan Vernon, but no train was able to take absolute control of the chase. Even Jonathan Milan was left practically without teammates too early.
Meanwhile, the front group continued to collaborate with absolute precision. Dversnes was probably the rider who showed the best sensations in the decisive kilometers, and in the last turn, he already seemed the favorite if the breakaway managed to survive.
And it survived.
With barely a few seconds to spare, the quartet entered together under the flamme rouge while the peloton appeared far too late. Polti VisitMalta tried to play the tactical card with Bais launching the finish for Maestri, but Dversnes responded powerfully from the Italian's wheel and ended up winning clearly to achieve the most important victory of his career.

The victory also represents a huge relief for Uno-X Mobility, which had been having a very discreet Giro until now and found an unexpected and prestigious victory in Milan.
Behind, Paul Magnier won the peloton sprint 57 seconds behind the escapees and salvaged a fifth place that keeps him very much alive in the fight for the ciclamino jersey.
