"Don't drop me": the message to Pogacar that changed the outcome of stage 15 of the Tour

Remco Evenepoel's victory at Plateau de Solaison left one of the most striking images of the 2026 Tour de France. For the first time in a long time, Tadej Pogacar reached the decisive kilometers of a major mountain stage without launching one of his usual explosive attacks. Instead, the yellow jersey stayed with Remco Evenepoel and his teammate Isaac Del Toro until practically the finish line. Now we know the reason.

During the broadcast, Pogacar was seen talking several times over the radio with his team; we now know that the Tour leader was preparing to attack in the final kilometers of Plateau de Solaison.

Pogacar directly asked over the radio if he could launch his final attack: “Can I go for it?”

The response did not come from the team car, but from Isaac Del Toro himself: “Don’t drop me.”

This message changed the outcome of the stage. Instead of accelerating to try to break away solo, Pogacar decided to keep the small leading group formed by himself, Del Toro, and Remco Evenepoel together. The Slovenian set the pace until the final stretch and left the resolution of the stage for a climb sprint.

The decision ultimately benefited Evenepoel, who found the perfect moment to launch a much stronger acceleration in the final meters. The Belgian overtook Pogacar and raised his arms, while Del Toro crossed the finish line just six seconds later.

After the finish, the Tour leader was directly asked about that unusual outcome. Pogacar did not make excuses and acknowledged that Evenepoel was the rightful winner of the stage. The Slovenian explained that when the Belgian surged in the final meters, he simply did not have the capacity to respond to such a level of acceleration.

Vingegaard's crash could have changed UAE's strategy

The development of the race also helps to understand what happened. Until the fall and subsequent withdrawal of Jonas Vingegaard, UAE had their main rival for the general classification ahead. However, the Danish rider's accident completely changed the race scenario when there were still kilometers to go.

Since the start of the Tour, one of the main objectives of the Emirati team had been to place two riders on the podium in Paris. With Vingegaard out of the race, Isaac Del Toro had an even more realistic chance of finishing among the top three in the general classification.

In that context, sacrificing a possible stage victory to protect the position of the Mexican started to make much more sense.

Evenepoel also sensed it from within

Someone who also realized that something was different was Remco Evenepoel himself. The Belgian explained to Sporza that during the climb he felt that Pogacar was riding in an unusual way, which gave him the confidence to go for the victory in the sprint.

“They rode extremely hard for five minutes after that. When we caught Yates, the pace dropped a bit. In the last kilometers, I felt that Tadej was holding something back to keep Isaac with him.”

This perception also changed his tactical approach, and he was right.

“That gave me more confidence, especially because I didn’t feel like I was at my limit. I decided to wait for the sprint, and that turned out to be the right choice.”
