Van der Poel and Pidcock have their chance today: schedules and favorites for stage 17 of the Tour

After two intense days in the Alps and the time trial of stage 16, the Tour de France completely changes its script. The seventeenth stage is not designed for the great climbers or for a mass sprint, but for those riders who have been looking for the perfect moment to surprise from the breakaway for weeks.

Preview of stage 17 of the Tour de France 2026: the breakaway has another golden opportunity

With the general classification becoming increasingly defined and several high mountain stages still ahead, many teams without options in the fight for the yellow jersey have here one of their best chances to save the Tour with a stage victory.

Schedule and key points of stage 17 of the Tour de France 2026

  • Start: 13:20 h (CEST)
  • Expected finish: between 17:18 and 17:39 h (CEST)
  • Route: Chambéry – Voiron
  • Distance: 174.7 km
  • Total ascent: around 2,400 meters
  • Type of stage: medium mountain

Everything can be decided in the first hour

Although the profile ends with a favorable trend, the stage hardens very early. After a flat start, the road links several climbs that will turn the first 50 kilometers into a real battle to form the breakaway of the day.

Once that section is overcome, the route loses its toughness and favors understanding among the breakaway riders. The last scoring difficulty is far from the finish line and the climb of La Commanderie, crested just three kilometers from the finish, can serve to launch the decisive attack or reduce the group before a very selective sprint in Voiron.

Breakaway or chase?

On paper, the sprinter teams could try to control the race, but doing so will require enormous effort in a third week filled with mountains. Furthermore, the withdrawal of Jonas Vingegaard changes the landscape for Visma Lease a Bike, which will now have much more freedom to seek partial victories, while other teams will also bet on an offensive race.

All of this makes the breakaway the most likely scenario.

Van der Poel, Pedersen, Pidcock... all the favorites for victory

Mathieu van der Poel and Mads Pedersen emerge as the two big names of the day. The Dutchman arrives with the freedom to seek another victory, while the Dane has a very favorable route to defend his lead in the points classification.Van der Poel wins stage 9 of the Tour after a frantic breakaway alongside Pidcock, Johannessen, and Baudin

Tom Pidcock is once again one of the most dangerous riders if he manages to filter into the breakaway, accompanied by men like Michael Matthews, Mauro Schmid, Jasper Stuyven, Filippo Ganna, Victor Campenaerts, Jonas Abrahamsen, or Mathias Vacek, all of whom have ideal characteristics for such an unpredictable day.

After several days dominated by high mountains, stage 17 offers a different opportunity. It may not be the hardest of the Tour, but it will be one of the most tactically open, where getting the decisive move right can be worth much more than having the best legs.
