The seventeenth stage is not designed for the great climbers or for a mass sprint, but for those riders who have been looking for the perfect moment to surprise from the breakaway for weeks.

Once that section is overcome, the route loses its toughness and favors understanding among the breakaway riders. The last scoring difficulty is far from the finish line and the climb of La Commanderie, crested just three kilometers from the finish, can serve to launch the decisive attack or reduce the group before a very selective sprint in Voiron.

Breakaway or chase?

On paper, the sprinter teams could try to control the race, but doing so will require enormous effort in a third week filled with mountains.
