A rear wing on the saddle and an extreme chain guide: meet Keegan Swenson’s S-Works Crux 5 for Big Sugar

The American gravel season arrives this Saturday, October 17, at one of its most important events. The Big Sugar Gravel 2026, held in Bentonville (Arkansas), will mark the conclusion of the Life Time Grand Prix, the circuit that combines some of the most prestigious gravel and MTB races in the United States. Among the main contenders will be Keegan Swenson and Sofía Gómez Villafañe, both riders from the Specialized Off-Road Team and leaders in their respective overall standings before the final race.

This year's main event at Big Sugar features 163.8 kilometers and nearly 1,950 meters of elevation gain through the Ozark mountains, between Arkansas and southern Missouri. A course characterized by its particularly rocky gravel paths, poorly maintained roads, fast sections, and some water crossings. A demanding terrain that tests both the endurance of the riders and the reliability of the equipment.

One of the most curious aspects is the name that appears on the bike. Instead of his usual surname, Swenson has chosen to use his wife's name, Sofía Gómez Villafañe. A personal nod that reverses the most common tradition in Anglo-Saxon countries, where it is usually the woman who adopts her husband's surname.

There is also a sticker with the inscription «Gravel Daddy», the meaning of which is unclear. It could be another personal reference or a joke, but for now, there is no information to explain its origin.

However, the elements that probably attract the most attention are the saddle and its chain guide.

On the back of the saddle, there is a kind of wing that protrudes upwards, a completely unusual solution on a gravel bike.

We do not know if we are looking at a prototype from Specialized, an added accessory, or simply a joke from the rider. If it were truly aimed at gaining any aerodynamic advantage, it would be a new indication of the speed this line is taking in the discipline.

This is not the first time we have seen something similar. At the end of 2025, a Prologo saddle with a fin on its back appeared, used during the training of professional road racers. In that case, its function was also not officially confirmed, although the possibility that it was related to the rider's position on the saddle was raised. For now, the component that Swenson is using raises more questions than answers.

An extreme chain guide utilizing the bottle cage mounts

Another particularly striking technical detail is the huge chain guide installed on the bike.

The new Specialized Crux 5 is designed exclusively for single-chainring setups and lacks mounts for installing a front derailleur. A decision that allowed Specialized's engineers to gain space for wider tires, up to 55 mm, but that necessitates this type of solution if one wants to install a chain guide.

On Swenson's bike, there is a rather peculiar solution. The chain guide extends from the bottle cage mounts on the seat tube to the area of the chainring, using those attachment points to secure the device.

This is a particularly cumbersome installation that seems to respond to the need to ensure chain retention in a race like Big Sugar, where continuous vibrations and impacts on the terrain can test any drivetrain.

While we await more details, what is clear is that the bike Swenson has prepared for Big Sugar has captured a lot of attention from fans even before the race.
