Second victory, showcasing massive legs, for Jay Vine just like the one achieved in Andorra, finishing off a numerous breakaway that took more than half a stage to consolidate. 4th victory for UAE Team Emirates-XRG in this tour, serving to divert attention from the controversy surrounding Juan Ayuso's departure. Meanwhile, Jonas Vingegaard, doing his thing, manages to regain the red jersey almost effortlessly.

Jonas Vingegaard now leads the general classification of La Vuelta

The start of the second week with a stage through Navarre territory that led the peloton from the Sendaviva Nature Park, near the Bardenas Reales, to the heart of the Navarre Pyrenees with the finish at the Larra-Belagua cross-country ski resort, the Spanish side of the Piedra de San Martin, a new stage with only one third-category climb, the Alto de Las Coronas as the only categorized difficulty before the final ascent, but on a tough and rugged terrain with plenty of climbs that could have awarded points, some of them with a mountain classification.

The morning began with a strong outburst from Juan Ayuso against the way UAE Team Emirates-XRG had communicated his departure from the team, in the middle of La Vuelta and with a message he did not agree with. Fortunately, all this controversy was put on the back burner once the stage started on a day that, with the freshness that comes from a rest day, unleashed a tremendous chaos that prevented the breakaway from forming until well past the halfway point of the stage. Even Jonas Vingegaard himself, in the company of Victor Campenaerts, tried at one point to get into one of the splits.

The first part of the stage was full of tension and a crash occurred affecting about 30 cyclists, among them, the worst affected was the young Raúl García Pierna who had been having a splendid race.

Finally, 71 kilometers from the finish, the definitive split was formed and, as it could not be otherwise after such a struggle, with a lot of quality. No less than 27 cyclists with names like Jay Vine, Pablo Castrillo, Matteo Sobrero, Javi Romo, Kwiatkowski, Tejada, Masnada, Conci... With so many people, skirmishes between them soon occurred, but it was not until the ascent to the Alto de Las Coronas when a move by Javi Romo, who went solo ahead, caused the group to split in pursuit. Near the top, Jay Vine showed the best legs, with a strong acceleration and astonishing ease he managed to catch up with the Movistar rider.

In the Roncal valley, Orluis Aular, Julien Bernard, Archie Ryan, Xabier Mikel Azparren, Nicola Conci, Abel Baldersonte, and Pablo Castrillo managed to catch up from behind, with Alec Segaert first and Kevin Vermaerke later. A group that opened a gap that suggested the stage winner would come from there.

Alec Segaert tried to surprise by attacking at the beginning of the climb but once there, Jay Vine's strong pace thwarted his attempt. Pablo Castrillo counterattacked and, for a few minutes, it seemed like he could win the stage, especially when Jay Vine showed signs of weakness. However, it was not a lack of strength on the Australian's part but rather choosing the right moment. When he accelerated, he easily caught up with the rider from Huesca and, after a couple more accelerations, managed to drop the Movistar rider to go unopposed towards victory. Second victory for the Australian in this Vuelta, both of great quality.

Meanwhile, behind, Bahrain-Victorious set the pace but, just as the climb started, UAE Team Emirates-XRG took action quickly revealing Torstein Træen's weakness as he was dropped. Joao Almeida took action, in his style, with a hard pace rather than a sudden attack, but with more will than effectiveness, he did not manage to make a dent in Jonas Vingegaard although he did in other top riders like Egan Bernal or Giulio Ciccone. Meanwhile, Visma-Lease a Bike simply kept pace as the stage concluded with barely any differences among the general classification riders, but with a change in leadership at the top of the general classification, with the red jersey returning to Jonas Vingegaard.
