Trek leaks—by mistake?—its new 32" XC bike

In recent months, we have been witnessing a genuine technological race in the cross-country segment. Practically all major brands have renewed their flagship XC models, some even ahead of their usual launch cycles. The early arrival of the new Specialized Epic 9 was one of the clearest examples, but now an unexpected leak suggests that the real change could be much deeper. And the protagonist would be Trek.

The leak that could change XC forever: Trek may already have a 32-inch bike ready

At the beginning of this season, Trek surprised the entire industry by officially presenting the new competition bike used by the Trek Unbroken XC team. What was striking was not only its design, clearly different from any model in its catalog, but that the brand itself explained that that bike was not intended to reach the market.

It was an experimental project developed specifically for the modern XCO World Cup circuits, conceived as a testing platform to accelerate the development of future generations of bikes.

That machine combined concepts from the Supercaliber and the Top Fuel, but did not really belong to either family. Trek developed it from scratch after realizing that the evolution of the circuits was highlighting the limitations of more traditional XC bikes.

The current courses include more technical rock gardens, jumps, more aggressive landings, and increasingly faster descents, forcing manufacturers to completely rethink their competition platforms.

Therefore, Trek's engineers opted for a completely new frame with flex stay rear suspension, 115 mm of travel, competition-specific geometry, and a shock located under the top tube. All of this developed in close collaboration with riders like Riley Amos, Evie Richards, and Gwendalyn Gibson.

At that time, Trek insisted that this bike might never reach stores. However, what has just appeared in one of its latest publications could give a completely different meaning to that statement.

The clue appears in Trek's 50th anniversary video

The American brand is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026 and recently published a video reviewing its entire history, from those first frames made in a small barn in Wisconsin to the most advanced bikes of today.

Precisely in the final seconds of the video is where an image appears that has not gone unnoticed by the most attentive observers.

In the background, a bike can be seen that clearly maintains the architecture of the XCO prototype presented by Trek this season, but with a detail impossible to ignore: the wheels appear to be 32 inches.

The image appears for just a few moments, but it is enough to appreciate proportions very different from those of a conventional 29-inch bike.

To be honest, this possibility does not completely catch us by surprise. In recent months, rumors from manufacturers, suppliers, and various industry players have multiplied, pointing to the arrival of the first commercial 32-inch bikes. Until now, however, no major brand had so clearly shown such an apparently advanced project.

The most striking aspect of this leak is precisely the level of development that the bike seems to have.

We are not looking at an improvised prototype with experimental components. By the level of integration, finishes, and overall appearance, the bike seems to have already surpassed much of its development phase.

Will we see it debut in the World Cup?

Trek made it clear months ago that its XC prototype had become a continuous experimentation platform to gather data in competition. If the brand already has a 32-inch version, the World Cup would be the ideal stage to validate its performance against the current 29” bikes.

The main theoretical advantage of 32-inch wheels would be a greater ability to overcome obstacles, maintain speed on broken terrain, and increase stability on descents, precisely some of the aspects that have evolved the most in modern XCO.

Of course, there are also significant challenges related to weight, wheel stiffness, acceleration, or geometry adaptation, aspects that until now had limited the expansion of diameters larger than 29 inches.

However, if a brand the size of Trek already has an apparently finished bike, it is very likely that it is not the only one working in this direction.
