The 2026 Volta a Catalunya begins with Vingegaard, Evenepoel, Almeida, and Pidcock: route, stages, schedules, and favorites

Road 22/03/26 09:06 Migue A.

The Volta a Catalunya 2026 kicks off this Monday with a lineup worthy of a grand tour and a route designed for the mountains to dictate the outcome. From March 23 to 29, the Catalan round will once again bring together some of the best climbers in the world in a week marked by accumulated toughness and the absence of time trials, a detail that opens up the field of contenders.

Stages, route, and scheduled times

The race features seven stages and just over 1,080 kilometers, with a profile clearly oriented towards high mountains. Three mountaintop finishes, Vallter 2000, Coll de Pal, and Queralt, will be decisive in the overall standings.

  • Stage 1 (Sant Feliu de Guíxols – Sant Feliu de Guíxols, 172.7 km)
Nervous opening day, with rolling terrain and a technical finish. A dangerous day for positioning.
  • Stage 2 (Figueres – Banyoles, 167.4 km)
Broken profile but more favorable for sprinters. Likely a reduced sprint.
  • Stage 3 (Mont-roig del Camp – Vila-seca, 159.4 km)
Open day: it can be resolved in a sprint or with long-range attacks if there is a good pace.
  • Stage 4 (Mataró – Vallter, 173 km)
First serious mountain test. A mountaintop finish at over 2,100 meters that will start to sort out the general classification.
  • Stage 5 (La Seu d’Urgell – Coll de Pal, 155.3 km)
Queen stage with over 4,400 meters of elevation gain. A decisive day with five climbs and a high-altitude finish.
  • Stage 6 (Berga – Queralt, 158.2 km)
New mountaintop finish after a very explosive day. Ideal terrain for long-range attacks.
  • Stage 7 (Barcelona – Barcelona, 95.1 km)
Montjuïc circuit. Short, intense, and with real options for changes in the overall standings.

The 2026 Volta a Catalunya begins with Vingegaard, Evenepoel, Almeida, and Pidcock: route, stages, schedules, and favorites

Evenepoel, Vingegaard, Almeida, Pidcock... The 2026 Volta presents a level comparable to that of a grand tour, with several clear contenders and a very deep peloton

This year's edition has an element that conditions the entire race: there is no time trial. This completely changes the script and favors the pure climbers, forcing the overall contenders to move in the mountains without the margin to recover time in other terrains.

In this scenario, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma Lease A Bike) stands out as the reference. Not only because of his recent level but also because he is the rider who best adapts to this type of route with long climbs, a constant pace, and the ability to wear down rivals day after day. If he sets his pace in the high mountain stages, it will be very difficult to drop him.

However, the key may lie in how his rivals attempt to destabilize him. Remco Evenepoel (Redbull BORA), for example, does not have the same pure climber profile, but he does have an offensive capability that can break the race at unexpected moments. If the Volta hardens far from the finish, the Belgian may find his terrain.

Also in play is João Almeida (UAE), probably the most consistent rider in the peloton in this type of race. His way of racing, always improving and without major ups and downs, fits perfectly into such a demanding week. The unknown will be his condition after the last few weeks without competition.

More open is the case of Tom Pidcock (Pinarello Q36.5). He arrives in one of his best moments, but this Volta represents a different test, and he will have to chain high mountain days against specialists. His explosiveness will give him options at key moments, but the overall will require something more than that.

Behind, the range of candidates is vast. Teams like Lidl-Trek, Ineos, or Decathlon present several riders capable of getting into the fight, which could lead to a much more tactical race than usual. Names like Landa, Mas, or Carapaz also arrive with the need to find sensations, which could translate into a more offensive attitude.

The Volta a Catalunya re-establishes itself as one of the major tests of spring. With three mountaintop finishes, explosive stages, and no time trial, the script points to an open race where the mountains will be the only judge.

Everything indicates that the overall will be decided in the Pyrenees, but with a finish in Montjuïc that never allows for relaxation. An ideal scenario to witness a first major duel between the names that will mark the season.
