After a week filled with tensions between Strava and Garmin, the sports social network has wanted to send a message of calm to its community, especially to the millions of cyclists and runners who use both platforms.

Strava lowers tension and promises to maintain active connection with Garmin

In a statement released to several international media outlets, a Strava spokesperson has assured that the company "does not foresee any interruption in the connection with Garmin" and that maintaining active synchronization is their top priority.

"Uninterrupted connectivity for the segment of our community that uses Garmin remains our top priority," stated the company.

The message comes after a series of events that have strained the relationship between both companies. In early October, it was revealed that Strava had filed a lawsuit against Garmin in the Colorado Court, accusing them of infringing several patents related to their Segments and heatmaps, as well as breaching the cooperation agreement signed in 2015.

The conflict escalated when Strava publicly denounced new guidelines for Garmin's API developers, which required displaying their logo on all shared activities and threatened to cut off API access starting November 1st if not complied with.

After initially opposing, Strava eventually confirmed that they will comply with the new rules to avoid any service interruptions, although they insist they do not agree with Garmin's brand policy.

In the same line, the Strava spokesperson added that the company "does not agree with the extensive brand presence Garmin wants to impose," but, for fairness, will apply a similar attribution system with all their device partners. "Our goal is to make brand labeling as unobtrusive as possible, and we believe it is the right thing to do considering the mandatory changes Garmin is demanding from all developers before November 1st," they pointed out.

The decision coincides with the update of Strava's API, which since October 11th already requires developers to include attribution to Garmin when the data comes from their devices, even if they do not directly connect with Garmin Connect.

Despite the media noise and the ongoing litigation, all signs point to Garmin and Strava users being able to continue synchronizing their activities normally starting November 1st.

From Garmin, the response remains unchanged: the brand simply states that they do not comment on ongoing litigation.

For now, the connection between these two digital fitness giants remains active, and everything indicates that the legal and commercial conflict will be kept in the offices, not in the devices.
