Primoz Roglic and Juan Ayuso are cutting time and tightening the classification of the Giro d'Italia
The rain and wind added to the long time trial of the Giro d'Italia, leaving the unexpected winner as the Dutchman from Lidl-Trek Daan Hoole, while among the favorites for the general classification, Primoz Roglic cut some of the time lost on the sterrato and Juan Ayuso approaches the pink jersey still worn by his teammate Isaac del Toro.
The Giro d'Italia remains wide open after a time trial marked by rain and wind
We have the Giro d'Italia. This is the conclusion that can be drawn from the results of the long time trial of the Corsa Rosa in which Primoz Roglic, who was in 10th place in the general classification after the sterrato stage, managed to save a large part of the rain that hit the rest of the favorites for the general classification. However, the time he cut from Juan Ayuso seems insufficient, leaving the Alicante rider strengthened for the remaining 11 stages.
A time trial between Lucca and Siena, 28.6 kilometers long, for which the weather forecast predicted storms towards the final part. This situation favored the first participants a lot, including the cyclist from Lidl-Trek Daan Hoole who set a phenomenal time. Shortly after, the top favorite for victory in this tenth stage of the Giro d'Italia, Joshua Tarling, started, who was able to beat the Dutchman comfortably in the first split. However, the increasing wind in the final part made it impossible for him to maintain his performance, and he ended up conceding 7 seconds at the finish line.

The stage victory was practically decided with increasingly unstable weather and merciless wind hitting the cyclists. As we mentioned, the first of the favorites to start was Primoz Roglic, who benefited from doing almost the entire first split on dry ground. However, it started raining before the timed point, resulting in him losing 30 seconds to Tarling at that point.
From there, the sky fell on the cyclists, who struggled to survive in the challenging curves dealing with the slippery road. Ciccone, Bernal, Carapaz, Tiberi, even the leader Isaac del Toro, all lost a significant amount of time in this first split, around 30-40 seconds compared to Primoz Roglic. Everyone except Juan Ayuso, who only lost 8 seconds in this first part despite starting under the downpour.
These differences would widen in the second split, although it was the last stretch towards the finish line that really opened up the gaps as the headwind that had been hitting the cyclists increased.
At the finish line, Primoz Roglic lost 1 minute 15 seconds to Daan Hoole, a time that even left him out of the top 10 in the stage. However, in terms of the general classification, it was a good result. He put 1 minute and 43 seconds on Egan Bernal, numbers that were also similar for Carapaz and Ciccone. However, cyclists like Simon Yates or Antonio Tiberi only lost around thirty seconds, allowing them to stay ahead of Roglic in the general classification by just about twenty seconds.
On the other hand, Juan Ayuso, who had managed to improve the Slovenian's time in the second split, was also penalized by the conditions of the last stretch and ultimately lost 19 seconds at the finish line, although he still maintains a lead of over a minute over the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe cyclist.
The leader Isaac del Toro was another one who deflated in the final stretch, conceding over a minute to Primoz Roglic, which obviously also allowed Juan Ayuso to gain ground in the general classification, leaving him just 25 seconds behind the Mexican, which helps the Alicante rider reclaim his position as the leader within the team.
The time trial of the 10th stage of the Giro d'Italia leaves a completely open scenario in which we will have to see Primoz Roglic's ability to perform in the mountains, if the power struggles in UAE Team Emirates-XRG do not end up taking a toll, or if Simon Yates can make up for his unfinished business with the Giro d'Italia after that unfortunate 2018 edition when he lost a Giro that was within his reach after Chris Froome's brilliance.
