Pogacar and Vingegaard draw, Simon Yates wins the stage from the breakaway, and Healy is the new leader
Spectacular stage, as expected, in the mountain festival that the Tour de France had prepared through the Massif Central. A day in which the spotlight was on a top-level breakaway that put the UAE Team Emirates-XRG in check, forcing them to make an extra effort. The breakaway was brilliantly resolved by Simon Yates.
Simon Yates certifies his fantastic year with a stage victory in the Tour de France 2025
Cycling spectacle for the true climbers on the roads of the Massif Central, a tough stage with over 4,000 meters of elevation gain between Ennezat and Le Mont-Dore Puy de Sancy. Elevation that accumulated in just 165 kilometers where the cyclists had to face no less than 8 categorized climbs, including the final ascent to Mont Dore, as well as a good number of other climbs that could well have awarded mountain points.
At the start, the peloton faced the first of the climbs with a real festival of attacks until, halfway up, a group of enormous quality began to consolidate. Riders of high caliber like Simon Yates, Iván Romeo, or Pablo Castrillo joined this group. Finally, after some kilometers of back and forth on the false flats following the summit of the climb, the breakaway was fully established with 28 riders at the front.

A breakaway, as we were saying, of very high level: Victor Campenaerts, Simon Yates, the Paret-Paintre brothers; Healy, Baudin, Powless, and Sweeny from EF Education-EasyPost; Arensman, Quinn Simmons, Julian Alaphilippe, Michael Storer; Ben O'Connor, Luke Plapp from Jayco-AlUla; Raúl García Pierna, Iván Romeo, and Pablo Castrillo, to name the most relevant.
The breakaway started to gain an advantage despite the attempts of UAE Team Emirates-XRG to keep it in check, sacrificing Wellens in the containment work, but it was unsuccessful and the lead gradually increased. However, the turning point for the escapees came just over 100 kilometers from the finish when an attack by Ben O'Connor made the first selection in the breakaway.
At that point, the riders from EF Education-EasyPost took control of the breakaway, seeing clearly the possibility of winning the yellow jersey of the Tour de France. In fact, from that moment on, the lead began to increase until it reached almost 6 minutes.
Approaching the penultimate climb, Ben O'Connor tried again, but it only served to make Ben Healy's teammates surrender. Initially, Healy seemed a bit hesitant about whether to save himself for another stage victory or go all out for the yellow jersey, but after being left alone on the next climb, he set his usual infernal pace without caring who was behind him.
Meanwhile, in this final part, Visma-Lease a Bike took the lead in the peloton, with strange movements like attacks from Sepp Kuss or Matteo Jorgenson, which served to weaken Tadej Pogacar's teammates, who even had to close the gap opened by Jorgenson a couple of times.
As they reached the final ascent to Mont Dore, a short but quite steep climb, Simon Yates, after spending the whole day reserving energy due to leading the breakaway alongside Ben Healy's teammates and waiting for a possible move in the general classification by Vingegaard, didn't hesitate and launched a strong attack from the bottom.
This move was initially responded to by Ben O'Connor, who easily reached his wheel, and a bit further back, Thymen Arensman did the same. However, the reigning Giro d'Italia champion had one more card up his sleeve, which this time proved decisive, although Arensman stayed 30 or 40 meters behind, resisting to concede the stage and keeping the tension until the last meters.
Meanwhile, Ben Healy switched to time trial mode and managed to maintain a fantastic climbing rhythm, only conceding time and finishing 31'' behind Yates. Additionally, he managed to overtake O'Connor, earning 4 valuable bonus seconds.

It was time to look back at the peloton, where the first to make a move, timidly, was Remco Evenepoel with Oscar Onley on his wheel. Pogacar, simply maintaining his pace, managed to close the gap and then launched a furious attack, to which Jonas Vingegaard responded convincingly. With little recovery time, he changed the pace violently again, and once more, the Dane stuck perfectly to the Slovenian's wheel, and after that, they looked at each other and tacitly decided to settle for a draw today. A pause in the last half kilometer that served to confirm the change of the yellow jersey, now on the back of a fighter like Ben Healy.
